Anybody makin' 8125 strings???????
« on: May 11, 2008, 09:25:00 PM »
Do 'yall know of anybody that's making 8125 bowstrings? I normally make my own strings but I'm trying to avoid buying a couple spools of this stuff at $50 each!

Chad Weaver (LBR) makes em, last time I checked. I think his personal preference is DF97, but he gives 8125 a close second, IIRC.  I'm sure he'll respond or PM if he see's this.

F8125 is simply a thinner strand version of Dynaflight'97.

Likewise, Dyneema'02 is also exactly the same as Dynaflight'97 but with less than half the way content.

All three are the exact same blend of Dyneema HMPE.

I have 8125, but only in six colors because I don't get that many orders for it (vs 20 or 21 colors of Dynaflight '97).

Hate to disagree with Rob, but 8125 is slightly different than Dyna '97.  Dynaflight '97 and Dyneema '02 are 100% SK75 Dyneema, but 8125 is 92% Dyneema (BCY doesn't say what the other 8% is--my best guess is Vectran).

8125 is a smaller diameter strand, but almost as strong as Dynaflight (120 lb test vs. 125 lb test).  8125 is supposed to be a tad faster, but going with a low strand count may require putting a few wraps of dental floss at the nocking point for a proper nock fit--padding out the serving and/or double serving negates the benefit of a lighter/faster strings.

I'm about 4 weeks out on orders, but I'll be glad to help if I can--just shoot me an e-mail at [email protected], or there's an order form on my site (www.recurves.com).

Hmmm, BCY must have altered the 8125 forumla - too many years ago, originally they told me it was the exact same as DF'97.

The basic BCY concept with 8125 was a string material better suited for Olympic recurves in that it made for a rounder string as more strands were used to achieve the same string diameter as DF'97 or D'02.  I guess that some folks just decided to push the envelope and go with less strand counts - maybe there were issues as a result, such as more stretch and creep, thus the beefing up with Vectran?  An F8125 10 strand string is spidery tiny!   :D

Rob,

I can't speak for Chad, but I haven't found any "issues" with low strand count 8125.  I usually make 12 strand 8125 strings with .030 halo serving, but I sometimes make 10 strand strings for myself and there are a couple of low poundage (40-45#) ACS CX's out there wearing (8) strand strings that I built.  One of those bows has literally hundreds of shots on it and NO COMPLAINTS.  LOL!!!  Life is too short to shoot an overbuilt string!  HA HA HA!!!  BTW - I pres-stretch my strings at a rather high poundage and after that they stay VERY stable.  Before I started rolling my own, Chad made my first to 8125 strings and they were AWESOME.

CC,

I meant that the "original" F8125 was touted by BCY as DF'97 only thinner.  This was more than 10 years ago.

I spun some "hot rod" strings for OL's early ACS proto's and they were 8 and 10 strands of F8125 - talk about spider web thin strings!

I use 8125 and make them 12 strands with a small double serve for nock fit a a bit of padding on the loops for my curve and made ont for a mate and he said it was the biggest change for the better he had ever experienced on a bow. They do need a good prestretch though or they take a while to settle. The only downside is the cost and trying to get it here in Australia.

According to the BCY website 8125 is 92% SK75 Dyneems and 8% SK65 Dyneema.

Lancaster Archery has 1/8 lb spools avail now.  ~$25 each.  According to the BCY site even though the 8125 is rated at 120 lbs, it is 23% less strong than 97.  All that means is that if you do not put enough strands in your string the 8125 will creep.  You can go to the BCY site and read the FAQ...
