B-50 and Shrew
« on: May 12, 2008, 05:14:00 PM »
Just wondering if anyone has tried B-50 on their Shrew instead of 450+ or other FF strings?  I like Dacron, and was just wondering, or is this a No No for a Shrew?

I had a Shrew that had a b-50 string and a ff string . I like both , the ff was a little faster but not by much and the b-50 was more quite .

I put B-50 on mine and it was a totally diffrent bow in a negative waay. The bow lost to much performance, had more vibraton and I took it off right away. JMHO I would stick with the stock string. It last and is very quite.

Seconded.
B50 has it's place & that's on selfbows & older bows. Modern longbows & recurves really do perform better with modern strings.

B-50 is fine on Hill style bows and self bows but the Shrew bows because of their design do not like B-50. Here's an excerpt for my instruction sheet that comes with every new Shrew.

Quote
The string that comes with the bow is of 450+ material.  This is a high performance string much like fast flight but with less noise.  It is a very strong string being 150# per strand as opposed to a Dacron string which is 55# per strand.  The 6 or 8 (depending on the bows weight) strand may look weak and flimsy but it is a 900 to 1200# string, the equivalent to an 18 strand Dacron.  You may use any other type string you wish on your Shrew but the 450+ is what I like and recommend. If you use any other high performance string such as fast flight or other HP string material , the strings loops MUST be padded or doubled. If they are not and you experience any damage to your bow because the string loops are not padded, your warranty will be void.

I have used B50 on my shrew recurve for the last 6 years.  It has performed well for me.

The Shrew I had that I used a B-50 string was the Sabertooth which was a older model also . It shot great for me with FF or Dacron . I was very impressed with how well it did shoot using the diffrent string materials although I mainly shot it with the FF . I have had  the newer Sherw and a Griffin but I shot them with the 450 string so maybe it was the nature of the old Shrew designs that it shot both well . Anyway you have got to love them Shrews !

And I took it off...

The big advantages (to me) of FF type string materials is they generally reduce hand shock (in some cases by a lot), have very little stretch/creep (less adjusting), and are a lot tougher/longer lasting.  Other than a few bows with sentimental/collector value, I don't care to own a bow that isn't FF compatable.

My preferance is Dynaflight '97--I even use it on both my selfbows (both have reinforced tips).  No problem with noise either.  I don't know of any reason to use dacron on a bow made for FF type materials.

I twisted up a 12 strand D97 and padded the loops to 18 and my Samurai is deathly quiet.  I haven't tried Dacron on it so I have no idea how Shrews shoot Dacron.  If it ain't broke don't fix it.
