Riser wood
« on: July 02, 2023, 10:21:44 PM »
Where to get it reasonable?  I liked Frog blanks but they went out business.  I been stabilizing maple with color but that gets expensive real quick.  Spectraply is okay but not getting any cheaper. Some of the exotics too many $$$.

I get most of my wood from West Penn Hardwoods. They used to be located 20 miles from me but moved to N.C. a while back. I buy 2x2 turning stock in 12”,18”,24 and some 30” lengths. They have a deal if you buy $150 worth of turning stock the shipping is free. They have a pretty good selection of exotic woods and often run sales.

I think any riser wood you buy is getting more expensive all the time…

a couple years ago I loaded up on a bunch of that high density ChromaPly material in 4 colors. The price per riser is pretty good, but getting those 2” thick panels shipped to the west coast  was astronomical. I think they are in PA.  It’s good stuff. I believe frog blanks was purchasing from Chromaply too. Only they were peddling the lower density stuff, and I didn’t care for it myself…. The HD Chromaply has much thinner laminations, and much better mass weight and strength. Closer to Diamond wood than the cheaper spectra ply .
