Carbon arrow

Need a bit of advice perhaps. 50# bow @ 28". Long story short, Cut to 28" w/ 125 gr. point, 2016's fly beautiful for me. If I wanted to go to a carbon shaft and not the million dollar a dozen ones, choices? I've shot wood nearly forever and of course the 2016's occasionally but might try some carbons. Help please! Thanks.

What is your draw length? I assume shorter than 28".

A GT 35-55 would work for you and a couple others depending on what finished weight arrow you want to shoot.

The thing to remember about carbons is to "TUNE BY LENGTH".You will have a much easier time if you select a shaft that will be a little weak with the point weight you want and cut 1/4 inch at a time from a shaft untill you have what you need.

Check out Sipsey River.If john has any GT 35-55 blems,You won't find a better priced Carbon.

I'm thinking a 500 spine should work well for you and use the heavy inserts and you should be very close in weight as well.  I shoot 54 and 56# at 27in off my BW's and shoot the Beman MFX 500's with our 100gr insert and 125gr pt at 28in and they bareshaft perfect.  Good luck, Mark!

I shoot the same carbon arrow/spine in all my recurves that at #50-#55 at my 28.5" draw length.  I shoot 29.5" CX 4560's (same spine as 250's, 400's, 4000's by other makes) which has a spine of about .400.  I use 3-4" vanes, standard insert, and 125 grain point for a finished weight of 500 grains.  Adding a wrap (which I use on hunting arrows) adds about 10 grains...

It sounds to me like your draw is shorter than 28"@50# though.  If so, I think you would need a 150/.500 spined arrow...

so would you use for a lighter arrow weight..sorry not trying to highjack the thread...but im lookin for some carbons for a 52#@26" gamemaster2...i currently use a 2018 30" long w/ 100gr head. total weight is 512grs. i would like a lighter & shorter arrow. something around 450-415grs completed.??

The lightest REASONABLY priced carbon shafts I'm aware of are the Beman ICS/Cabelas Stalker Extreme (same arrow) whch are 8.4GPI in the 400/5570 spine, and the CX Terminator Lite (not Lite Hunter, which uses the Buff Tuff wrap) which are 8.2GPI in the 4560 size.

Maximas are the lightest I know of at 7.something in the 250 spine, but that light they are clearly meant for the compound speed bow guys, and are quite expensive...

Thanks guys, my draw length is finally getting to be 27" when my head ain't thinking about it. Is there any kind of chart that makes sense out of different manufacturers of carbon shafts. Quite confusing for an old woody dude.

A Gold Tip 35-55 is .500 deflection which is what you need.The 35-55 part just means that it could be tuned to shoot from a 35-55 pound bow depending on length and point weight.

As a general rule,I've found .500 carbons to work well with 50# bows.That is with draw lengths close to 28 inches without extreme FOC.

If you want a carbon to tune perfect you can't be locked into a certin length arrow.You either have to be flexable on arrow length or point weight.

You can get carbon inserts that are threded, on the inside the shaft part,to accept brass weights,so you can tune by weight.

You will get closer to the weight you want in an arrow if you tune by weight and length though.

It seems that when you check the chart it does suggest the 500 spine with a 125 gr point. I use this arrow shaft in the easton cheapest shaft (powerflight) they make and have the shaft cut to 29 and I draw 28 1/4.

The bow is a checkmate recurve that is 49 lbs at 28 inch draw. If you are going to want to add weight to get a higer weight arrow by using the special brass inserts etc, I then would go with the 400 size, if you are going to stay with just the 125 gr points I would then use the 500 spine.
