Boo backed osage
« on: June 29, 2023, 10:30:06 PM »
This is the boo backed osage James Parker gave me at the Classic. 68" t/t, 66"n/n, 1 3/8" at the fades with a straight taper to the 3/8" tips. James has added a dye job to the back but it started rubbing off as I was tillering so I rubbed down the back with 0000 steel wool which gave it an interesting patina so I left it like that. She's got 6 coats of Tru-Oil with a steel wool rubdown after each coat and a spray of satin pole to cut the shine. The tip overlays are osage, the handle wrap is rattan chair caning with a red leather floppy rest.
I've put about 50 arrows through her and she shoots well but with a bit of thump. After looking at the full draw pic I can see the outer 1/3 of each limb is stiff which could be the cause. She pulls 44# @26".

Mark, I'm not happy with the tiller. I've always had problems seeing and achieving proper tiller of R/D style bows. I like the way Roy's bows have a more circular tiller, following the lines of the deflexed handle area. I think these stiffer outer limbs is the cause of the hand shock(a bit of a thump) and maybe I should go back and get the outer limbs to bend more. At 44#@26" I should be able to do that without too much weight loss and I could always pike each limb an inch or two to regain that weight. 64" to 66" is more normal for me anyway.

My blank has the tips 1" forward of the back of the grip.
Did yours have that much before tiller?

We’re picky about where our smoke goes… 😉
