Up in Canada on a no bear hunt we were out back shooting our bows.  Three compound shooters and me.  I'd been getting ribbed by them for a couple days for carrying my longbow.
.  When the snow stopped we took the opportunity to shoot some.   At 20 yards I was shooting pretty good for me and shooting generally better groups than any of the three of them.  One guy popped off that I couldn't be as accurate as a compound shooter.  With one arrow in the target I laughed and told him I was already shooting better than he was.  Drew and shot and stuck my arrow I had just shot before that.  Those three mumbled back and forth then went back to the cabin.
Yeah, it's like they think people starved to death before modern equipment.
I can afford to shoot most any bow I like.  And I like Primal Tech bows.

Was shooting an ASA 3-D shoot and got there late for the start, the organizer drove me out to meet the last group.  Five compound guys.  They were using all the standard insults, Robin Hood, antique bow, etc,,,  I told them I wished I could shoot as good as Robin Hood,  At the end of the course they were still ribbing me, so I asked who had hit the most 10's? (me) who had the highest score? (me).  But you shoot from the Woman's stake.  "OK, if it's so easy, let me shoot your bow and then you can shoot mine."  "Winner buys beverage of choice."  Deal.  They set up a target at about forty yards and gave me a compound that fit and ten arrows.  Put 8 of 10 in the middle and the two were out about three inches,  Then the most vocal of the group stepped up and I gave him 10 arrows.  As he struggled to draw it, I reminded him if he dry fired it he bought it.  He finally got one almost back and launched it down range, almost hitting the bail.  He just looked at me and I told him I drank Shiner.

In the mid 1960’s my Uncle Gene was walking in on a trail with his Bear Grizzly (I think that was the bow he was using).  It was during the rifle season and he passed a gun guy. Who greeted him with a “you’re going to hunt with that?”.

About an hour or so later Gene was dragging a decent 4X4 whitetail out past the same guy. The guy said “you shot that with that thing?” Gene just smiled and said “yup”, and kept going.

This has happened to me a few times.

Go into a store like Canellas and ask for traditional archery equipment like fixed blade broadheads and get told " If you're serious about deer hunting you shouldn't try to hunt with a longbow "  :nono:

Beemann,
I know we talked about that interaction you had Paul Schafer, but each time I read that I get a good chuckle. Thanks for sharing that.

Yup…. Shooting traditional with a camp full of guys using compound bows requires pretty thick bark. I hunted with a compound bow for many years prior to getting into traditional archery, and mu hunting buddies thought I’d lost my mind the first time I walked into elk camp with a long bow…

But… after demonstrating how accurate these bows can be at 20-40 yards, they quit razzing me completely.

But one evening sitting around the camp fire we had some visitors from another camp that we had seen over the years. A couple of cocky guys that I swear only came to visit when they ran out of beer. I didn’t much care for the guys myself.

So this particular evening they decide to give me a hard time about my long bow I had hanging on a tree right next to my tent. It was one of those pitch black nights with no moon, and you could barely see our practice target about 30 yards away sitting up against a bank. I put up with them bad mouthing my bow and my ability to hit anything with it for about 10 minutes…. Then without saying a word I walked over, grabbed my bow an turned and shot an arrow right through the camp  fire flames into the darkness….. These guys jumped up and said, “What the hell was that? “    I said go look at that target over there…. They said …. What target? And I pointed the direction I shot…. Granted…. If you didn’t know the target was there, it as very hard to see…..

When this schmuck came back with my arrow in his hand, I didn’t need to ask where that arrow hit the target because I knew it was dead center….. Amazing enough ….he made some remark about getting lucky…. I just shook my head, and went to bed… but I never heard another word about my long bow after that evening. My hunting buddies got a charge out of it though….  Shut the boys right up with one shot.     :biglaugh:

Oh like everyone get the classic "you can kill a deer with that', but the two I got a big giggle out of:
After a morning hunt stopped at the public practice range and got some shooting in, after lunch before going out for afternoon.  A few kids came up and started asking me, the classic "does that kill a deer", then one asked "how do you aim that thing?"  I explained the process.  After a bit of talking they was getting ready to walk to stand and the other said "but you can only shoot to 10 yards with that."  The practice field was on edge of a picked bean field, so I pulled out a old beat up arrow, drew and launched for maximum cast.  The arrow hit the dirt, I turned to him and said, "I can shoot further than your pins can reach".  Then walked away amazed.

The best was years ago, shot a lot of 3D off season, my brother and his friend was still shooting compounds and his friend was real cocky.  Kept razing about limited accuracy and range.  Finally after a 3D shoot we 3 shot at, he started in again.  After we finished I decided to take a lesson out of a Howard Hill book.  "Tell you what, let's shoot the 20 targets on the course again.  You pick the targets we shoot, then for the first 10 you pick how we shoot them, the next 10 I will pick.  We will only count hits in the kill zone 8 ring.  The one loser has to buy the winner a case of beer."  The guy was amped up, though my brother who hunted with me a lot tried to talk him out of it.  But the guy said deal.  He selected what targets we would shoot on the 3D course, and agreed the first 10 he select he could pick how we shot them.  We was off, and I was struggling to hold close score with him, as he was selecting distances I haven't practiced from, 40-45 yards.  Then came Target 11,  I walked off the trail, found a forked tree about halfway to target, and put arrow in kill zone.  "Hey, thats not on the course!"  he protested.  My brother, which started laughing as soon as I walked off the trail said, "It was his turn to pick how you shot it, no one said have to stay on the course".  The guy walked over, drew and nailed the tree, one arrow gone.  The next target, I walked up to 20 yards and said, "easy shot, nock the arrow, kneel and shoot deer, within 4 seconds".  I nocked, dropped and bam, meat in freezer.  He walked up, nocked arrow, got release on, dropped to knee and I said "Time", but he punched an arrow that went into another county.
The next target, after hearing him complain, I said "this is easier".  I dropped at 15 yards, layed on my belly and shot the Lion.  I got up and he said "I cann't do that?"  Why not was my response.  He then realized his limitations and said, "What beer you want".  My brother still loves telling him this, especially after he switched to longbow. :biglaugh:

I don't have any stories like these, mostly because I've generally just shot and hunted with very close friends and my brothers.

I do remember my first deer. Dad (RIP) had never bowhunted, and was never able to kill a deer with a rifle (very few deer in those days). When Dad saw my Doe, killed with a Ben Pearson Cougar, he told me the deer must be tame where I hunt.  No malice, just confusion.

A couple years ago I was at a 3D shoot with a friend (a compound shooter) when we caught up to three compound toting archers.  As they were finishing up one of them asks if I've ever killed anything with that bow?  Before I could even respond my buddy fires out "He kills everything with that bow!"  Certainly not a true statement but the look on the guys face was priceless.

I was in a club for many years lots of compound shooters but I was the only Trad hunter. They actually went pretty easy on me but I would get the “ why don’t you get a real bow “ or “ what if a big buck shows up at 40 yards ?” Stuff. They never really understood but I did bring in enough deer to keep them shaking their heads.
On the “ big buck “ thing , no I never got a big un, quite a few smaller eights though. Thing is I was probably more proud of the does and small bucks than anything they ever got.

Hunted with a buddy on a lease, as a guest.  He used to give me grief, until we started "wing shooting" for hogs on the run.  I was 7 for his zero, over the weekend.  He quieted down a bit.
