carbons for 50#@26" Super Shrew
« on: February 16, 2007, 10:48:00 AM »
I'm shooting a 55#@28" Super Shrew Deluxe that I purchased from you at the Kazoo expo.  I pull to 26" for 50#(measured from my bow scale).  I like my arrows at 27 3/8" from nock throat to BOP.  I cut all my arrows to that length work with all of my bows.

I'm thinking about the Carbon Express Terminator 4560 arrows or the Blackhawk Vapor 3000.  Is it a pretty good assumption that with the 100gr brass inserts and 125gr heads that I could leave the arrows a little long and shorten them down to get bare shafts flying straight at 15-20 yards?

Right now I'm shooting 50-55# woodies w/125gr field pts cut to 27 3/8" and getting very good flight.  Haven't tried to bare shaft the woodies or shoot broadheads however.

Also, I like 3 5 1/2" shield cut feathers on my woodies.  Seems like 5" parabolic is a little more common on carbons with most guys.  Any benefit to using less feather with carbons vs. woodies?

Thanks,
Mick

DON'T CUT them untill you do tuning.
The adds are full of carbons that were cut and don't fly good for the bow they were purchased for..

I think the BlackHawk Vapor 3000's would be fine...you might tweak head wieght a little.

Depending on head wieght, I find the 3000's are good from 45 to 60 pounds.

Talk to John at Sipsy river traditional archery. Look at the Carbon express heritage arrows. You would need the ce150.  Keep your arrows longer. I would suggest a 30" arrow with carbons.  They stiffen up very quickly when cut.  The nice thing about the carbon express is that you can use the goldtip internal screw in weights to lighten your spine with the correct insert.  Another nice thing about these shafts is that they are 10 grains per inch. Pretty heavy for a carbon.  John has great prices and great advice.

Mick,

The other thing you could potentially look at is finding some Axis Junior shafts at a local pro shop (or call Kustom King Archery and talk with Tim as he had some too). These are the same spine as Axis 500 shafts, however they come precut at 28" and they have vanes (I stripped the vanes and refletched with feathers). You could conceivably cut length from nock end (you won't get point adapter out) if you wanted to take some length off, but they'd probably be close enough if you used 200 or 225 grain points.  My son uses these uncut and I have a 100 grain steel adapter and 100 grain Grizzly 2 blade head to get him to 200 grains. They are a skinny carbon so you'd have to deal with fit on some bow quivers (I believe they're 9/32).

I would personally use an Easton Axis 500 or the Beeman MFX 500 (same shaft as Axis with woodgrain finish) with your setup.  With your draw length at 50#, I'd guess a BlackHawk Vapor 3000 may need a 100 grain brass insert and 200 grains up front as my SWAG opinion.

I agree with all above and would add that I have had great results with CE Heritage 150 and 250. I also llike the CE Thunderstorm SE's, great arrow !

mparks, Thanks to Roger and Ron I now am the proud owner of a LH Shrew Scout 55 @ 28 and I have a 26" draw. Just bareshafted them over the last two nights. Both arrows will work, but I bet the 150 will be my go to arrow. The CE Heritage 250 has 200 grains up front and is 27.5" long. As jacobsladder suggested above I use a 145 tip with a 50 gr gold tip internal weight. The CE Heritage 150 is simply 27.5 long with a 145 tip only. I think I will need to trim another 1/4" off and it will be just right, or slightly weak without feathers. By the time I add 20-30 grains of feather it will stiffen up perfect. By the way the CE250 weights in at 560 grains, have not weighed the 150 yet, but geussing 100grain lighter ? Shooting about 160fps. These Shrews, "What a machine " !!!
