Anniversary of Bart Schleyer passing 2004
« on: September 14, 2023, 09:45:00 AM »
Today is the anniversary of the passing of Bart Schleyer at Reid Lake Yukon, cause of death still uncertain.  Great man, friend of Paul Schafer.  True wilderness man.

I thought it was determined a bear killed him.

Yes, Bart was killed by a Bear as far as they could figure out, they only found his gear and maybe some body parts scattered around his campsite.

From the article I read they found his clothes folded and no sign of struggle.  The easy answer is that a bear killed him, but there is some doubt based on physical evidence and the layout of the area.  We'll probably never know how he died.  I seem to recall that his bow was half way between camp and the lake.

I am thinking they found some remains that indicated a bear got him. We will never know if it pre or post mortem.

I'm sure he had more than one set of cloths, so folded is probably a mute point.  High odds it was a bear.  Very high bases on all info.

Perhaps, but the article cast some doubt and the investigators found this odd.

I would find it odd if the man went out into the wilderness for an extended stay with only one pair of pants and a shirt.  Folded cloths seem normal in that situation to me.

Do you have a link to that article?

I have read those articles, and refreshed reading them again and my reasoning for his death hasn't changed.  Those articles contain to much speculation.  Not going to name all of them but 'a bear would likely not be able to sneak up on him', while bears are some of the quietest animals while walking.  'Nothing wrong with his cap', could have came off from the struggle, or a limb while trying to get away. And, yes, the clothes folded is not odd either.

The odds of someone following him and sneaking up on him are much less likely that a bear.  He was in a very remote area.

Occam's razor definitely applies here.

Either way, it was sad to hear the news about Bart. The man loved the outdoors and adventure.  :campfire:

Indeed a sad event, as are those surrounding all the great ones, as they passed.  Many things we will never know until that final day.  Bart was indeed the last wild man.
