XX75 Aluminum arrow suggestions please
« on: February 13, 2024, 03:23:53 PM »
Im looking for suggestions for XX75 arrows for 45@28 BW longbow. I draw 28”. Currently I shoot at 250 grain tip and would love to stay with those tips. Any suggestions on what spine aluminum arrow I would need.

If 250 grains is too heavy, which I’m thinking it will be, please make suggestions. I would like to shoot  a 500 grain arrow.

Based on my limited experience with lighter poundage bows, I would guess 60-65# spine to start with 250 grains up front and 29" arrow.  That might mean 2018 or 2020 would be worth a try.

If you went away from the 250 gr points to 145 or 160 I would suggest a 1916 or 2016.
The 2016 might work with those points depending on  your shooting style or try a 2018. Just about all of those would have you at 500 grains without the 250 points.
I've got some 2016's that are 28 3/4" back of point that weigh 475 with a 125 point. 2018 weighs about 515 grns.

What’s a stiffer spine? 2018 or 2016? Because I’d rather go with the stiffer spine and use a little bit heavier  point.

 If your pulling a true 28" I would consider 2018 or 2117.

2215 would be another option, about like 2117 in spine, but lighter in weight.

2018 spines out at 67/68# on the standard AMO 26” centers scale, 2016’s are 61/62# spine.

My 52 @ 30” PLX I draw to 28”. It shoots both 2016 and 2018 with 145-165 GR points equally well. I’d think 2016 should work well for your set up

I ran your info through the 3R spine calculator. 2016 was a little weak, 2018 was very, very close. Now I realize the calculator isn’t perfect but IME it’s gets you close. Of course the test kit really can answer the question and if I was planning on hunting with these arrows it would be my choice as well.

I like 2016s for your widow longbow thats cut to center and 45 pounds at your your 28 inch draw and  arrow cut to 29 inches long.

Not sure about the point weight of 250 grains. It will weaken spine. But I shoot 2016s with 175 gr points on a fast recurve with a high performance string thats 45 pounds at my 28 inch draw and cut to center and my arrows are 29.5 inches.Perfect flight.

What weight are your finished arrows at? I’m hoping for 550ish

I would say 525 ish in overall arrow grain weight is very close.

2016s are 10.5 grains per inch.29 inch arrow.305 grains.

Insert and 175 grain head.About 200 grains

nocks and feathers around 20 grains.

30 inch shaft add another 15 grains.

My 2016 weigh 475 at 29" with a 125 point so you would be right at 525 with 175 gr point.

I’ve had great luck with 2016’s in the 45-48 pound range but I only run 125-175 grain tips.
If you really want to run 250 heads I’m guessing you’ll need to go stiffer than 2016, but I also believe you’ll be well beyond your goal of 500ish grains, maybe closer to 600. Remember these inserts are 21 grains I think, which isn’t nothing.
It’s not hard to hit 600 grains with XX75’s.

FYI
I've been using 2016 the last two years. I draw 26.5-27". 300 gr up front. Four fletch 3" feathers. Seven critters killed in that time.
It's really simple. Just don't take those borderline shots. Tomorrow is another day.
