What target medium for Stone points?
« on: March 11, 2024, 12:14:59 PM »
I have a few stone point arrows that I won over the years and I would like to take an animal with one.  However, I will not attempt that unless I can shoot them for flight, yet I would like some suggestions on that medium to shoot them into so I don't dull them.

Thanks in advance.  :campfire:

I've shot metal broadheads into sand many times, it dulls the head and a great way to remove rust.  So, wouldn't it dull stone points also?

Any other options?

I had given this thought before as I have an arrow that was given to me but did not want to hunt with it till I shot it 1st.

I'm thinking about finding some of that soft yellow foam that they use in car seats and such, or some of that cheap carpet chunk foam as Lord knows I can get plenty around here.

I was going to get a closed cell spray expanding foam used in construction to fill a hard-body turkey decoy for a target.  Also, rigid foam insulation comes in 4' x 8' x 1/2" that would make a target 2' x 2' x 4" target when glued together.

I have used the spray foam for targets for years. I don't think that's going to help much compared to the regular 3 day targets.

So, what I am going to do is get some chunk foam and loosely pack it because what I want is for the medium to 'catch' the arrow instead of stop it if that makes sense.  I feel that any medium that is going to stop the arrow is going to dull the head , no matter what the head is.

Years ago I bought or traded for one of the foam targets that have been available in the S. E. US over the years. I was told it is left over from the carpet industry sprayed in cardboard boxes. It is sort of a rubberized foam. I've used it for all broadheads, stone included. I wouldn't hunt with any broadhead arrow without shooting the arrow first.

Pat, I have known them forever and have hunted with them  many times. They made those targets at my request and they went public.  I have seven of those in my backyard.  They are great people.  :campfire:

Terry, I've shot completely through 2 of those foam targets over the years. I still use one but have to shoot at the side.   They are excellent for testing stone points.

Many thanks Pat, but I'm going to try my foam since I can get it easily. Because I do not want to take any chance on dulling my stone point.

A simple bit of pressure flaking will make a stone point as sharp as ever. It's so simple even a caveman can do it.   :goldtooth:

Hang several layers of cloth on the clothes line with space between layers..like curtains if you will, shoot lower half of the hanging material and the arrows will just flip..its important that the material is not attached to anything on the bottom, hanging just like curtains.

Water
As in shallow clear pond is best
Light bamboo to float a folded piece of paper target
Shoot
Most arrows float enough to recover quickly
Dry
Keep an eye so it doesn't absorb
Good hunting <><

Thanks Cory.  I was thinking about shooting in a pond to test it at a leaf, but you bet I was going to see if it would float 1ST.

When shooting, you might consider the reusable ballistic gel. Although, there are You Tube video on making your own, Clear Ballistics sells blocks for archery too.

Stuff an old blanket in a feed bag or cat litter bag doubled up.  2 seconds to make and plenty of visual spots to shoot at with all that marketing on bags these days.

I guarantee you will be surprised at how little penetration you get and how easy they will be to remove.  With bows that will get 4-6 inch penetration on a rhinehart foam I'm usually pulling an inch or two out of my blanket bag

Walmart sells those big styrofoam blocks with a plastic bag cover for targets. I wonder how they would be for stone points. I think anything you shoot into will dull edges. Dunno
