I walk my dog through the same field and Forrest roads every day and this morning we saw a downed spike buck that was not there yesterday morning. This was a private road that is traveled regularly by own and grandchild in a 4wd golf cart thing. The animal was pristine looking from forward of hind end, but the rear end was completely engulfed in black flies and seemed to be eaten out, like a huge bite was taken out. No smell, no wounds to speak of, but I did not try and move the carcass. Any clue? This is north Ga, and I have never seen or heard about this sort of thing. Should I call wildlife management or try to contact owner, even though they should have seen by now?

I'd tell the owner and the Dept of Game.  Sounds like the maggots will be at work within a couple days.

Maybe coyote kill and the flies take over.

2X on the yotes, very typical of them.

Or a bear in north GA. I think I'd tell the land owner and call the DNR.

Thanks all, told all applicable peeps yesterday so we will see. Just from my perspective , the location of the deer was at least two miles from a paved road, I have never seen bear nor coyote anywhere here in the 5 years I have been here. . Just looked like a bad comedy movie of an animal lighting a fart. I did ask to be informed of any results of their opinion.

To me it sounds like ravens or crows started feeding on it ? They start at the anus that’s the first place they can get into the carcass, maybe even buzzards? Then  the flies and maggots in my opinion? But don’t know what the cause of death possibly being?

Looked to be, just sitting there looking without gagging, like a a big piranha bit it’s ass off. I did hear back from game office that it was a possible poachers bad shot miss with a shotgun and not retrieved due to having gotten to private land. They had not clue as to what happened in the rear, lol.
