Hey all, new here. New to Archery (other than with my dad as a little kid), and want to start hunting as well once I get comfortable/confident enough. Didn’t grow up with a family who hunted at all, so I’m a little late to the game… Ive been practicing with a Samick Sage over the past year (as much as possible with our first kid being born last year as well), but have a 64” Mesa from 3rivers on the way. Anyways, excited to be here and excited to start the Trad journey!

Welcome! Lots of great people on here. You are entering into the wonderful world of Traditional Archery.
My route was a little different. My dad introduced me to archery when I was 9 or ten. He took me with a couple of times on whitetail hunts. He and my mom bought a 40# recurve for me on my 13th birthday in 1965.
Pretty rare day when I don’t think about archery at some point. My son and I have made four backing trips into the Colorado Rockies to hunt for elk.
Love it.

Welcome. Save yourself some trouble and do a search here on tuning your arrows to your bow. You’ll be frustrated until your arrows fly straight. It’s really pretty simple, don’t allow some posts talking about the granular aspects of it pull you into the weeds. Get an appropriate arrow, an appropriate head, and adjust the length of the arrow to tune.
Any of the sponsor archery suppliers on this site can put you into correct arrows and heads for your bow. Call them and they’ll walk you through it.
RMSG, Kustom King, or 3rivers are what I’ve used successfully.

Make sure you are not "overbowed" (too much pull weight on the bow)
Start with 30lb. limbs, to learn good form, then proceed to heavier weight pull as you get better and stronger.
Too heavy of a bow will prevent you from learning good form and ultimately you will struggle to be a good archer.

Thanks all!
Judd, I did start with 35# limbs on the sage last summer, then moved to 45# limbs for a while, and just did my first session tonight with my new 50# Mesa (I’m at about 54-ish# at my 30” draw). I was messing around with some different spine test arrows and Point weight combos, and seems like I’ve found a decent combo that gives me good arrow flight (based on my calibrated eye). I’m excited to keep practicing with it, just need to get a couple more arrows since I only had one of that specific spine and point weight.
