FPS - what is considered fast in a recurve?

I know Iknow  speed doesn't kill.  :rolleyes:  I was just curious to know what is considered fast or smoking for a recurve.  200 is smoking.  180+fps, 170+fps, 160+fps.  I just chronoed my chekmate h2 47# at 10gr/# and got an average of 181fps.  

Like I said, I know speed doesn't kill but just curious what others think is fast.

My current recurve bow ( Stumbo) shoots right at 200fps.  I have been shooting this bow for over 17 yrs.  My first bow, which I also shot for about 17-18 years was a Herters.  It had a draw of 65lbs.  My current bow draws 70lbs.  About the same, however the Herters only shot about 150fps.  This is a guess on it.  It was really slow. When I get it out now seems I could run down and catch the arrow. However I shot many animals with it during those years.  These are the only two bows I have ever owned.  Why spend the money when you have one that gets the job done.

for me, 190-200+ is smokin'. that's what my 50# dalaa shoots with 440 gr arras. I say 175-185 is great, 165-170 is okay if you've got pretty hefty arrows. your setup/speed is awesome, you should be very happy with that!

I've got some 62# limbs that I'm gonna chrono tomorrow with 10gr/# just to see how they compare in relation to the 47# @ 10gr/#

Atlatlzoom, I am very happy with the set up.  Shot a 3d this past weekend with the 47# limbs that I've had only for a couple weeks and shot a 323 out of 440.  My 62# limbs have taken a couple deer and I was very impressed by how they performed.

I have always heard for a fiberglass bow, 9gr/lb pull/180fps is good and 10gr/lb pull/180fps is above average, and 190fps for 11gr/lb pull is smokin.

181 is plenty fast for 10 grains per pound at 28" draw.  190 would be smoking.  If you draw 30" I would add 8 or 10 fps to those numbers.

I shoot a Bob Lee " Hunter " 56 in. 43# @ 29" my total arrow weight is 435 gr.  My arrow speed is 189 fps, and that's a 10 gr per bow wt. and the arrow itself grains per inch 13.5

And I think that this speed is nice, but speed is not everything if you can't be accurate.  Focusing on one aspect of the process will cut everything else short.  Confidence in the entire piece of equipment will give you a better outcome in the end.

IMO shooting 10GPP,175-185 is average, 185-190 is fast, 190+ is damn fast...

My fastest recurve is a 58" 52#@28" Lee TD Hunter.  Shooting 525 grain CX Terminator Hunters drawn to 28.5"(10GPP), this bow chronographs 190FPS...

My next fastest bow, a 60" CM H2 53#@28", using the same arrow (9.9GPP), chronographs 187FPS...

My recurve is 50#-28" and i draw 29" and i measured 53#. Arrow is 550 grains and i recive 193 fps. With  2213 alu. result was 195 fps. I think its ok for recurve.

Wow!!!  My longbow ( I know, not a recurve! ), at about 58 pounds will shoot a 600 grain arrow like 160 fps and I am thankful it goes that fast.  I could use FF string, but I like the quiet of the B-50.

Your bow is smoking compared to mine for sure!!

My 55#@28" Blacktail recurve with 600gr. arrows puts them out there at 175fps. But more importantly they really hammer the target with good tradgetory. I could go less weight on the arrows and get the speed up...but I like the sound of the 600grs. hitting the target! Can't wait to witness the effect on a deer or elk.

If you dont have enaugh weight on your arrow, energy will stay on your bow and will not be tranfered to arrow.

For the first time I chrono'd a bow of mine. Went to a shoot this past weekend and guys kept sayng how fast my bow was. I am more interested in quiet but after all the comments I was curious.
 Blacktail T/D, 53#@28,30" 2216 with 125 field point, drawn 29". Three arrows-199,199,204 fps.
 Plenty fast enough for this guy.

my howatt hunter shoots a 480 grain arrow at 186 fps ,  55" @31" draw. While that is pretty fast with my long draw and only 8.7 gpp I thought it would be a little faster.

It has not been my experience that arrow weight affects bow efficiency. I have cronoed 425 and 485 grain arrows out of my bow and when you do the math the KE for each arrow was virtually identical.

I shoot a hawk recurve. It says 53# @ 28" My draw is 30 1/2 and it speed checks at 208 fps average.

Everyone keep telling me this, yet on all the bows i own FF has been quieter.

Btw. my 48#@28" Horne Hunter recurve shoots a 485 gr arrow right around 185fps with my 29" draw and deep hook grip/release. With the the compound trigger it went 197fps, and at 30" draw and mech. release, 204fps. Speed variation with the mech. release was less than 1 fps.
The Hoyt Vectrix XL at 29.5" and ca. 55# (70# bow set on minimum) shot the same arrow 230fps. adding weight quickly brougth speed below 200, and at 1080grs, was 154.
