Thinning Minwax Poly

Been dipping shafts in Poly. Is there an advantage to thinning? If so, what do you use and what ratio? How many coats?

Got this from Arrowman.  "...I'm now using a diluted polyurethane as a sealer coat to start with.  I cut it approx. 30% acetone.  Once it dries (approx. 24 hours later)  I steel wool it with #1 steel wool to smooth everything and then seal with GL.  Normally I use two dips of GL and get a super smooth finish that won't crack if the shaft gets really wet"
I had asked him what he used and that was the reply he sent.  I now use the same thing and it works well.

Yup cut it with 30% paint thinner, let dry good between coats and sand after first coat. I than dip two more times checking for any of the grain raising, if it does lightly sand(steel wool) only the spots it is raised and dip again. I have had shafts lay out from Feb. into April under the snow and found them and they were still shootable. Shawn
