selfbow winners
« on: June 16, 2008, 10:22:00 AM »
I'm either am getting better at building self bows or know some dang good shots - mostly the latter.

Last spring Rob Tattoo took second place in the new "primitive" target class over the pond with a bow I traded for one of his fine knives.

Now, our own Doug S tells me he won the Cloverdale Nationals selfbow class using a bow I made for him from some nice dry billets from Brian Halbleib. The bow was a partial payback for some great guiding work donated by Doug to our western mulie chase a couple years back. I just gave him the bow at the Iowa Traditional shoot on Memorial Day.

Way to go Doug!!!!

Good for you Shaun!  Wish I could have seen the primitive shoot in action.
I don't know if I met Doug S. at Cloverdale on Saturday but I did have a fantastic time checking out all the wonderful selfbows hanging around.  I even got the opportunity to shoot an osage SB from a man named Jack on the practice range.  Much to all of our's disbelief I kilt the pig.  Cloverdale was great and the comradiry was excellent.

Shaun,
After seeing the little osage bow you had down at the Expo, I'm not a bit surprised!

Cool.  Congrats to Shaun and Doug.

Darren Shue's son John finished second, just a few points back with one of my bows.  But I can't claim any credit at all 'cause I've been shooting my bows for years and still can't hit nothing.

I'm sure it's different for you Shaun.  I bet your bows are magic  :)
Take a kid hunting!

The magic is all in the shooter. I have started to build some bows that keep their shape, shoot hard and are easy in the hand, but like you John I am only a fair shot. Always amazes me to see folks who make accuracy look easy.

Doug told me that the bow he has which is tillered for split finger works perfectly for his three under form if he turns it upside down.

I still remember (not that long ago) when tillering was a TOTAL mystery to me. Folks would bend a bow on the tree, walk up and make some pencil marks. "What???" I would say. I saw nothing to mark. Lots to learn and having fun doing it.
