arrow flies good 3under, no good split! help
« on: June 17, 2008, 08:58:00 PM »
I have been having one heck of a time tuning my bob lee recurve.  I cant get the nock point set when bareshafting shooting split finger.  The bareshaft is always low by about a foot or worse at 15 yards.  My fletched arrow kick.  I've had my nock point all over the string, about worn out my serving.  Even colored the arrow with a white crayon to see if I'm getting some contact.  Some of my stiffer arrows were rubbing on the left side of the shelf but not with my weaker arrows.  Fletched weaker arrows still flew bad.  So I figured it had to be that my release just really sucks.  Today out of desperation I started shooting 3under and the arrows flew much better.  Bareshaft is hitting with fletched arrow.  My nock point is 1/2" above square and the tiller is 1/16" more on the top limb.
My question is my release just better with 3under or is there some other reason I cant get it to shoot split finger.  Thanks for any replies!

Try raising your brace height, Gary

I hear you Ian, I just wanted to shoot split but Iam tired of seeing my arrow fly poorly.

sagebrus my bow brace height calls for 7 5/8 to 7 1/2, how high you think I should try?

Yep, brace height along with making sure your arrow nocks aren't too tight and put a nock set below as well as above. Many of us will move the arrow on the string during the release cycle shooting split finger....O.L.

I think most of the problems come from downward pressure on the arrow. Try and make sure that the back of your string hand is in line with the bow and start with a little space,it clears mine up.

I agree with Onehair's comment about downward pressure.  I consciously keep my top finger away from the arrow nock.  Then I draw mostly with the middle finger.  This has really cleaned up my arrow flight.  I started shooting a bow 3 under then switched to split and it took me a long time to understand that there's more to it than just putting one finger over the nock and shooting like I always had.

Thanks for all the ideas to try guys but for some reason(has to be my release) I cant get good flight shooting split.  Plus I'm getting some rubbing beside my shelf, that doesnt happen with 3under.  Sure hate to give up on split cause my bow sure feels easier to draw that way.
Hunting season will be here before you know it.  So I'm not going to fight it anymore.  I give it another go next spring.

Great suggestions all around...

I doubt this will help much but: Somebody standing behind me watchin some years back noted that my pointer finger was putting a wierd twist on my string (as on my hand, that finger was MUCH shorter than my middle finger.)

I started just pointing with my pointer finger along the arrow and it really cleaned up the release...kinda like "two under"

the other thing I tried was using the "deep hook" grip. I make sure my hand is straight and I don't roll the string in draw. It helped.

No need to give up just yet... it's not that hard to re-program the ole coconut computer if you work the "bag" a good bit once you find what works...

From my limited experience, it would be your release.  I shoot my recurves 3 under and my Hills split.  I have to shoot the Hills with regularity to work my split finger release to where it is up to my 3 under.  3 under I rarely have a poor release.  Split is just not as easy to let loose the string in my opinion.
