Tanning Hides
« on: June 18, 2008, 12:34:00 PM »
Reading back in some older threads I thought that some people had mentioned an interest in DIY tanning. Having the same interest myself, I did a quick search and came up with this:

    http://www.motherearthnews.com/Do-It-Yourself/1983-01-01/How-To-Tan-Rabbit-Hides.aspx

and this:

  http://www.motherearthnews.com/Sustainable-Farming/2001-10-01/Home-Tanning-Process-Preserves-Pelts.aspx

I thought someone might find it useful. I know I'm going to try this when I get my first rabbit. I assume the process could easily transfer to the pelts of most critters.

Enjoy!

brain tan is the only way to go IMHO. been doing it for year (deer, beaver, coon, mink, etc) works great cuz all ya need is a knife, brain, hide, and hot water.

Can you go into more detail on brain tanning?

Check out braintan.com for lots of resources.  Basicly you flesh the hide, dehair the hide, degrain the hide, some stretch the hide at this point others don't, make brain slurry mix, soak hide in mix, wring the hide, soak some more, but hide in rack and soften until dry, smoke the hide.  There's wetscrape and dry scrape. Both have different approaches with a pretty much the same end product.  There,s room to add you own individual way to do it too.
