For those that hunt in buckskins....
« on: June 25, 2008, 04:15:00 PM »
I did a search on hear and there were a few threads but none with detailed information about buckskins.

I am curious as to those that use them, how do you like them?  Do you wear garments under them like long johns?  Did you make them water -repellent, if so, what did you use and how well does it work?  How do you clean them, if you do at all?  Do you wear them all the time when you hunt?  Do they get hot/cold?

What tips do you have for someone who is going to start using them?  (I don't care about the whole, "you will look like a deer" comments...I think that's a bunch of trash anyway)  I just want some input of what to expect and care for them.

Thanks

As far as how to make, treat and care this is a great book on it. Sorry can't say how it is as clothing though.

Not sure if you meant Traditional Bowhunter magazine instead of Traditional Bowhunting.
But I am looking at the current issue and must be overlooking the article, because I don't see it in Traditional Bowhunter.

Mike Yancey's article was in the June/July issue of Traditional Bowhunter magazine. I think he was hunting hogs in Texas.

I read that article last month.  Good one, too....very entertaining.  I was hoping I would get some people to chime in with tips and advice, little tricks they have learned while wearing them.
Thanks!!

As with any clothing, hunt in the shadows. They are VERY quiet and comfortable. I wear just my normal clothing underneath according to the weather. I don't worry about waterproofing. I never hunt in the rain as it's too easy to lose a blood trail.
No matter what type of bow is shot, we're all archers.

I'm interested in hearing some tips or advice also.  I was at Tandy Leather yesterday picking stuff up and picked up a copy of the book "Deerskins to Buckskins".  After pricing deer and elk hides tere I think I'll have to learn to make my own.
