What arrow tip for Pheasant
« on: January 27, 2007, 09:01:00 PM »
I have seen where some use a dull broadheads but can I use Game Nabbers on my flu flu arrows instead? I have three weeks to get ready for this hunt and I have never shot at anything flying so this should be fun.

Don't know why one would use a dull broadhead.  If you're hunting with retrieving dogs, should probably not use broadheads.  Just about any small game point will work.  What you have in mind will work fine.  Flu flus loose their speed very quicky though so plan to shoot within 15 yards or so.

I have plenty of Game Nabbers around and I plan on making a disk  target out of some foam I have in the shop. Now all I need is a volunteer to throw the target.

I have tried everything BUT broadheads...field point with a Zwickey Scorpio is the ticket.

Teknoclash, Check out the Wingshooter target thrower. Set it up to throw the fooz footballs away from you this as close to jumping a pheasant as you can get.

what kind of arrow are you shooting??  I would use a judo most likely if you can.

Are you going on a ranch or are you going by yourselves???

I would check the regulations for the state where you are going!!

I use the ace hex blunts, went on a hunt last weekend they worked great. Pheasnats are tougher to kill than you think. We had a few fly away with the arrow in them, but we found them later. Have fun !! You will be going back for more.. FB

There was a really good looking and smart guy on here a few days ago who posted pics of his bird heads.

I would be willing to bet that those who suggested not using a broadhead have never shot a Pheasant with an arrow. They are tougher than you might think. Use a broadhead. If you are hunting over dogs, don't make them razor sharp just sereate the edge, with a rounded point, the dog will be fine.

Nope, not going to put a broadhead on your arrows and hunt with MY dog, or anybody I know.  I have shot enough pheasants to know I don't like how the blunts/judos work and no bird with an arrow sticking thru him is going to get away from any dog.

Our local club just had our annual pheasant shoot yesterday.  We use broadheads or Pierce small game heads, almost exclusively.  Pointing dogs are also used, and if there is an arrow in the bird, are told to stay, and then the shooter retrieves the bird.  Been doing this for years and years with no problems.  We use mostly Bodkin factory seconds, since we lose a few, but I did notice a few guys were using Snuffer, Ribteks, etc.  Although I never have shot a pheasant with a judo point, or a blunt, I have seen ptarmigan fly off with judos in them, never to be seen again.  I suppose if you made nothing but head shots, a blunt or judo would be the ticket, but I know I'M not THAT good...
Incidentally, my son Chase got his first one yesterday and we will be having it for dinner tonight.
