Seeking longbow building knowlege
« on: July 01, 2008, 02:27:00 AM »
Gang; I would like to know if any of you have any knowledge to share about how to make a longbow that has no vibration, or hand shock. What tools do I need and what kind of wood do you recommend?
My goal here is a 66"-68" 60lbs@28" bow,

My dad has been a longbower for 60years never had much in his life and now has gotten bad news from the doctor as he has watched life go by for last 16 years through a window, The best gift I could give him would be a longbow that could just make him glow with joy! He could shoot it with assistance getting to the yard; I can't afford to buy him one (to expensive for me) so I figure maybe I could make one for him. He has given me the greatest gift in life for being a real "dad" now I am trying to pass those teachings on to my son. If you have any thoughts please share thanks so much, Eric
PS I know some of you have big hearts; please don't offer anything for free, I couldn't accept it and feel right. I only ask for knowledge.

no real help but a question. why 60lbs for a disabled man?

try 35 he'll be able to use it longer. I'm 23 and I wouldn't want to shoot a 60lb longbow. Most guys shoot them in the upper 40's. Big guys in mid 50's or if they use it to hunt elk and stuff.

I second lower poundage for a Man facing health problems.
Good advise from Bjorn, I had a Dryad bow in hand, workmanship is amazing, I would try finishing a blank from them. Basically you would need sandpaper and a hobby rasp.

Good luck,

THANKS FOR THE ADVICE GANG!

SWAMP PYGMY..I CHOOSE 60LBS, BECAUSE MY FATHER IS FULL OF PRIDE AND INTEGRITY, HE WILL NEVER ADMIT DEFEAT, IT IS WHAT HE HAS ALWAYS WANTED, HE IS A RETIRED POLICE OFFICER AND WAS IN THE 7TH SPECIAL FORCES GROUP IN VIETNAM, AND IS SUCH A PROUD MAN, THE OLD GOAT CAN PULL IT BACK, IT'S JUST GETTING HIM UP AND OUT TO THE YARD!

WHEN YOU GET OLDER YOU WILL UNDERSTAND A BIT MORE WHEN THINGS YOUR BODY HURTS MORE AND BONES POP AND GRIND TOGETHER; YOU WILL NOT WANT TO ADMIT IT EITHER AND ALWAYS TELL YOURSELF "YOUR AS GOOD ONCE AS YOU EVER WAS!"
