Need help on release/form (video here)
« on: July 01, 2008, 08:54:00 AM »
Since shooter's forun is on walk-a-bout for a time, I need to ask this question here:

Can someone recommend an "exercise/technique" to practice to eliminate plucking the string. I had a chance to get some video taken this past weekend, and I think I noticed that issue.  I really thought I was dropping my bow arm, but film shows another issue.

Also, if you see anything else, please comment in a constructive manner.

Of what I see.... looks good. To help stop plucking when you loose the arrow hold your hand to your face... That worked for me.

I noticed your elbow on your drawing arm is a bit high at full draw.  If your elbow is more straight in line with the arrow it will help to bring the release hand straight back when you release.

You need to draw the arrow further so that your hand CANNOT move out from your face.  It's not a lot butI think there's room to grow.  Just my opinion.

Now you see what all the fuss about that 56" Classic Hunter was about.  :saywhat:

Pull straight back after release. A guy told me to just relax my fingers after anchor. Ken

You shoot like I do, except you need to pull through shot and try to slide your hand across your face until you touch your shoulder, you should do better.

Good tips above. I can't add much other than if your hitting the mark, don't beat yourself up too bad.
I am always trying to improve my shooting, but if you start picking yourself apart too much, you'll end up more frustrated than anything. Find a good anchor point and stay consistant with it.
Just one more step please!

I find that I pluck less when I consciously think of pulling my elbow straight backwards while I hold on my target.  The bow hand should push toward the target on release, and the draw hand (think 'elbow') should follow through in the directly opposite direction.

As to the release, think this:  Hold your release hand perpendicular to the ground, like a handshake.    Now draw a line with a marker on the up-facing side of the index finger.  Upon release, that black line should slide across your face, and your hand should move toward your shoulder.  This will require a subtle rotation of the hand on release that lands with palm facing your shoulder.  If you can achieve that, it will make you more consistent.
Life is a whole lot easier when you just plow around the stump.

What Arwin said.  The goal is to hit the target.  Some of the best archers I know have certain "differences" in the way they shoot.  When you are not consistant, then it's time to hunt for a cure.  JMO

I have two ideas.  The first is guaranteed to help.  You should slow down a little bit and take your time.  And you also might want to try to canter the bow a little bit so that the arrow is on the top.  I shoot at about a 40 degree angle to the ground.

Archie has it right for me. I would not go to all the trouble of drawing the line and all. I do like he says and let the hand fall down and straight back from the string, if I do not do this I luck the string and shoot left. Shawn
