riser wood advice please!
« on: July 02, 2008, 11:06:00 PM »
My plans for tomorrow are to build a riser for my spare set of bob lee recurve limbs. Got my blueprint drawn up today. First order of business for tomorrow is picking up a block of wood. This will be my first real attempt, besides the practice riser i made from a 2x6, so im not looking for fancy or expenisve wood. Just want something relatively inexpensive, easy to work, and durable. Oh and accessible at the local wood mill! So what are my options fellas?

Also i was interested in having a block cut from some cedar we cut on our place. It is dead cedar, but in good shape. Could i use this for a riser?

thanks gents
kyle

Check out woodworldtx.com or texaswoodcrafts.net. They have a pretty good supply of domestic and exotic woods.

Cedar seems too "light" or fragile for riser wood. Get the heaviest, most durable local wood to try.

Kyle, You've got osage growing all over East Tx.   If you want to drive over to Shreveport I've got some sawn osage and zebra wood.

I wouldn't go with cedar, especially for a takedown riser.  Maybe in a longbow riser that is protected somewhat with fiberglass on the front and a laminated strip or two in it, but not for a TD riser.  I'd take Mike up on his offer.
