Anyone know how to reuse/recycle a shot up target bag?
« on: July 03, 2008, 04:44:00 AM »
Hey guys, Do any of you know how to or if even possible to recycle or fix the old target bags that are just shot to crap? Place another burlap bag over it? You know the big bags full of rags or netting? Or am I the only cheap skate in the Pow Wow?

do it all the time. I have some bags in the bow shop that have been redone over 10 years. I just get a new replacement bag, put a piece of cardboard on each side of the new bag. I lay the old bag on the floor and jump on it to flatten it out. Then slip it in the new bag and sew the top closed. cheap is cheap , but why pay for a item you can make the same as new. I get the new xl bags for $8.95 and a new target bag is $39.95 and you have to add ship cost as well.

Re-stuff it into a new bag cover.

I used leftover feedbags from feeding the cows around the barn, double them inside each other and then take reamins ofmy old bag and stuff in, and tie thetops with zip tie! Have made target bags like this, sewed them up to look like deer bodies for myself and some young shooters for years, realistic targets, not flat, can be stuffed with old rags or wal-mart bags to make your own.Sam.

I buy new burlap yardage from Joann's and cut a new face to sew on.  I have masonite cutouts of animals and spray paint them on.  Runs about $2 a target face.  I made the original bags from the same material.   it runs $4 a yard 48" wide, but you can get coupons for half off.

You guys rule.  I was just about to post a 'target topic'.  With me, my son and daughter and sometimes my wife all shooting pretty much daily (or many times a day), my targets don't last long.

I've been flirting with the notion of buying a hay bale - we should be the first kids on our block to own one.  But cheap burlap yardage from the local Joann's... That's a really good idea.

That's what I love about the "gang" always a helping word of knowledge! Thanks everyone!

Sweet old bill...where do you get your replacement covers from?

Hey GingivitisKahn...if you get the hay bale, use a lot of cardboard front and back...I tried that years ago and I was the first in my neighborhood, The neighbors loved it!They really thought It was really classy...Since they liked it so much, I put it in the front yard!

Ooh - hay bale in the front yard.  Now that's a heck of an idea, econnell71.  :-D

What's with the cardboard though - is that to help hold the hay together or to prevent hay bale passthroughs or what?

I came up for an idea for an everlasting lightweight, any size you want target that should cost less than 50 bucks to build and child can do it. It's going to have replaceable targets for deer, turkey, bullseye.

Going to make a thread I guess.

The idea is rather than have it punctured, I'm going to use blunts. It's going to be a box stuffed with cushioning, carpet, tarp, and fabric.

The idea is a cardboard front that slides in front of target and is held in place can have whatever you want painted on it. and then once it puncture the target it'll hit a layer of puncture proof cushioning that will absorb the shot, but not spring the arrow back. the cardboard should hold the arrow in place.

Cardboard is free or cheap if you're so lazy you go buy it. and I figure I can make a square box with cushion and a slot for cardboard to slide into pretty darn cheap.

I shot a fist sized hole in my target after 2 months. I just got into archery but I ain't paying 40 dollars for something I shoot through every 2 mos.

Well that sounds like a good idea Swamp..make that thread!

Hey there GingivitisKhan; Yeah the hay bales add a touch of class to the neighborhood i think...I will move them back after my point is made.

The cardboard does prevent pass throughs also keeps the hay together from rain and morning dew...also it keeps the hay upright after it has settled and shot to Sh*t.I tried it without, the arrow sizziled through the hay bale and right into the neighbors yard...(oops)

Lots of great ideas and I have done them, but I find if ya wait for the right tome and keep an eye on Dicks ads. ya can buy a new monster bag for $10 and they last a couple of years. Shawn

There was a vendor at Compton that sold a replacement bag for $20.00 bucks. He said you can never wear it out. It is guaranteed for life! I can't remember his name but I'll get it when I get home tomorrow and post it. I'm doing my best to prove him wrong but it's getting the best of me.

I was lucky to find some coffee bags xl size in a dollar store. I purchased 20 of them and made 10 target bags... I doubled them up and then filled with the recycle plastic bags that I get free from the local Walmart. I have 4 of the bags outside, 1 in the bow shop to shoot a 10 yards for bow setup. the other 3 I have in storage for replacements etc. The other 2 I gave to a buddy for his shooting range. I also have in the past purchased xl repolacement bags from Ultra Products LTD archery. BUt they were not as good as good old burlap...
