How to prep my bow form before glue-up?
« on: July 08, 2008, 09:48:00 AM »
I have some painters tape for the top of the form and pressure strips. What should I put on the rest of the form to keep the epoxy from adhering. Is there a spray that works well, or should I melt a toilet bowl seal and rub it on?

Try rubbing it down with paste wax and using saran wrap over the form before laying out your laminations, then another piece of plastic wrap after the laminations are layed on the form.

No need for the wax.  Use plastic wrap over the form and the bow.  Make sure the plastic doesn't get between the lams.

I wax when I build the form and once in awhile after. Like Mike,I'm not sure its needed with the plastic wrap. Also I use cheap plastic wrap cause its a little thicker and not quite as hard to keep from stickin to itself!
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Lowes carries a roll of thin, stretchy plastic on a stick that works perfect.  It's with the painting supplies and also the packaging supplies.  It's about 6" to a roll with a center handle to hold on to. Just roll it round and round the form and break it off at the end.

Yep, good advice folks.  After spending two hours separating my first one for the form, I've decided to use the dreaded plastic wrap.  I think I will look for the 6" roll and dispenser handle.  Thanks folks!

Plastis wrap is the way to go..It can get frustrating. Just did my first glue-up yesterday.

I had a 3 year old helping me, she held one end of the plastic wrap the other end still in the bow sat at the other end of the form. Once I got everything lined up we wrapped her end over the bow cut the other end then wrapped it.

the cheaper plastic wrap is thicker and doesn't cling very well, makes it a better choice for your form.  I wax my form as well.  Worked out great.
