Anyone like hunting water crossings?
« on: July 13, 2008, 06:29:00 PM »
Do any of you guys like hunting water crossings rather they be stream, river, lakes or beaver swamps?
I really like to hunt those beaver dam crossings out in the middle of nowhere. Especially during the rut when the bucks are on the move. I like to get in before dark and hunt all day. It may take 1 day or 6 straight all day sits here in downeast Maine with our low deer numbers but it can pay off big for the patient hunter.

to me the most reliable place to kill a big buck is to find his multiple tracks crossing a small stream..and coming up the other bank. If I can do that, I KNOW where I am going to be hunting.

My second choice is a parallel trail to the direction of the stream, hunting close to thick cover.

A small  river runs the length our 125 acre family land so we always hunt river crossings . The make good morning or evening stands .

I have hunted water crossings extensively including sloughs, creeks, rivers, small dams, etc. Anything that channels deer through good terrain makes for a nice hunting spot, especially if there is a place to hang a tree stand nearby.

Yeah they make narrowing down the travel route a bit easier. FOr me it is salt marsh creeks, or canals.

took a nice buck once at a creek crossing. he was right on the tail of a doe and never knew what hit him. have a new spot this season with a creek crossing. deer can and will cross most anywhere but definately have spots with high use.
i've also noticed how bucks like to stand in creeks and rub their antlers. love to see those tag alders all rubbed up!
now i'm pumped up!
