Something I observed at ATAR...
« on: July 14, 2008, 12:56:00 PM »
Well, I'm currently bowless so in-between the good conversation and b.s.ing I had a good opportunity to sit back and "observe" quite a bit this past weekend while at ATAR.  Something I noticed was the predominance of longbows over recurves.  I'd wager a guess that probably 60% or so of what I saw being toted around were longbows, predominantly the r-d type.  Of the longbows, I'd guess it was about a 50/50 mix of one-piece vs. take-down.  Most of the women carried recurves, though.
Seems like there were quite a bit more longbows than the last time I went to ATAR 3 yrs. ago.
Anyway, interesting observation methinks.

My friend MarthaK was there and shot a longbow on one course and a recurve on another. So your comment on "most of the ewomen carried recurves" could have been based on which day you saw them as I know many others do what she did as well.

It dose seam like the trend is leaning towards the Longbows....
Around here a few years ago if you looked up on the singup board there was was always twice as many Recurves as longbows, now there pretty much even....
I guess it just takes some folks longer than others to appreciate a good Longbow....

Bowless?  Dang, Tom, I got a perfectly good longbow up here gathering dust; just too stiff for me anymore.  You appeared to be a strapping young man; can ya handle 65# @ 28"?  I'll make ya a screamin' deal  ;) ; it's a shame that bow ain't gettin' shot.

Doc,
Thanks for the offer, bud..but there's one other thing I observed at ATAR - "I need to drop draw weight!"
Competitive bodybuilding in my 20's flat wore out my shoulders, so I'm now looking for something in the low 40's...seriously.
Hain't never been able to pull 65# without bein' mad at somethin'...

Likely so.  However, I wasn't at all implying that women couldn't, or shouldn't, be shooting longbows....just that that's what most of 'em had with them.

I never thought that was what you meant. I have a recurve I could send you to shoot until you get another bow, Tom. It's kinda high wrist but it puts arrows right where you're looking. Not a big name bow just a really good shooter. All you have to pay is shipping to you and it's your's until you want to pass it on.

That's what you get for sitting around and just looking (and thinking), friend Tom   :D  . Git yersef a bow (of any durn kind) that you like and enjoy shootin' and git back into the frey   :)  . It was real good running into you here and there all around the place up there at ATAR once again - and I don't want it to be another bunch of years before it happens again (good Lord willing)  :archer:

Yer tent idea for trad gang meet-ups was a winner idea too, BTW.

C2, PM sent.

Bernie, ya know, as long as I'm not able to shoot the competitions (due to being bowless) it's impossible for me to be beat.  :D

The TradGang tent went very well.  Next year it will be THE place to be, wait and see.

You will be bringing Barka-loungers and offering neck and shoulder rubs?

  :bigsmyl:
Good seeing you, Tom. Don't tell anybody I said that.

hey Tom!   my hats off to you for the tradgang meeting tent. if possible I'll try to get it in the shade for you (us gangers) next year. as for the bows, I agree with you. seems like more guys were shooting longbows than recurves. it was nice meeting you and several other tradgangers.

again...great idea

Gee, ya got a point there , Tom, LOL. Or you could just go primitive, like I did, that way you can still have the pleasure of shooting (more pleasure, IMO) but use the excuse your still learning the new/old ways -   :D

Tom, nice meeting you. If you need a bow, just let me know what you want. I'm sure i have something that will hold you over till you find your dream bow. If I do , won't cost you a thing. Just come out and shoot. Don

Tom, we had a good time shooting the bull inder the Tradgang tent. What a great idea!

My friends and I talked about the same thing with the longbows. I thought everyone was just getting afraid to shoot against us!!!!   :biglaugh:
