what is your opinion on ash as an arrow wood?

Good stuff.  Heavier and tougher than cedar. Comparable to birch, a little lighter than hickory and maple.

Ash is my favotite arrow wood. I'm taking two dozen tapered ash to Africa in about 6 weeks. If you shoot like me you'll love how tough ash is when you hit what you were not shooting at!

I too am interested in ash arrows. How do they compare to birch, as in straightness, weight, and spine, etc.?

I have been thinking about trying one or the other and " lo and behold", a thread on each one appears today. Great!

My experience is with cedar since the early years and in more recent times I also use aluminum.

that's all I use... I haven't found a shaft to match ash yet.... I know others will say different, but I'm talking about me....

I have to agree Ash is my shaft of choice. It is extremely tough and makes a great heavyweight wood arrow. I have had no problems strightening mine or keeping them straight.

Ash is tough to beat! Heavier and stronger than Birch, and once you get it straight it stays that way.

Just be sure the shafts are straight grained. If they are not keeping them straight will make you nuts. If they are good shafts you will have some excellent hunting arrows. I shot a small buck with one that was sticking out both sides as he ran thru a hemlock/cedar swamp. I had a great blood trail to follow but never found the broken shaft. When I found the deer the feathered end of the shaft was still sticking out of the ribs. The broken point end was underneath him where he fell. I've had other wood shafts as well as carbon and aluminum break in less harsh situations.
