Heavy arrows hittin high?
« on: July 17, 2008, 10:04:00 PM »
Hey everybody--I'm shooting a Black Widow SAIII 58" 57#@28, nock point +5/8". I only pull about 26 inches so I figure I'm pulling bout 52#s. The bow shoots great with either 50-55 or 55-60 cedars cut to 28". The problem I'm having is that with heavy arrows--both Hex Shafts and Ash spined 50-55 I'm hittin high--about a foot high! I was wondering if anybody else has experienced anything like this...ya'll got any ideas??
thanks, Rick

that bow is way to fast... lower your aiming point ( bend at the waist a little)

I think they are all underspined for that bow.  Try at least a 60/65 and you should see an improvement.

I've had the same thing happen.  I'll be shooting a shaft or two that fly real nice, then a different shaft will hit high constantly.  Haven't figured it out yet? I usually have to have a higher nock point with wooden arrows for this very reason..
Blessings,
Steve

Sounds like underspined to me. I suggest bare shaft tuning (as usual). You could try trimming as much as you can off your arrows- that will make them shoot stiffer.

Yup what Molson said... I shoot 52#'s and my arrows are spined 60-65 and I use 145r BH's and points. I also agree with Don.. regarding tuning, check your nock point again you could be "hoping" off the shelf.

I agree that they are undespined I would add about 10-15#s to your draw weight, so 60-65# spine maybe close or a tad heavier. It is not that they shoot so hard but are cut so far past center. Shawn

sound like a nock point problem.  with being overspined, i would think he would be hitting a foot to the left not high.  to see if it's a spine problem, put on some 160-200gr. field points.

Wouldn't that make it weaker and there for worse?

Are the diameter of the shafts hitting higher different than the ones that are not? That could mess up your nock point height and make the arrow bounce off the shelf and possibly hit higher....just a thought.

Thanks for all the responses guys, Maybe I am underspined with the heavy shafts--what makes this confusing is how well my cedars spined in the 55# range shoot--Has anyone found that the heavier weight shafts need to be spined heavier in order to shoot like lighter shafts??
thanks again, Rick

Spine should not be causing hi/low issues.

Are all the arrows the same length?
Shorter will hit higher until your "subconcious gap" adjusts.
