Sitting shots.
« on: July 18, 2008, 11:01:00 AM »
Been practicing sitting shot and found I'm shooting high. Is this natural? How do I correct?

Seriously though.
How are you sitting? Stool? Chair? Floor?
Are you on the ground or in a stand?
How high is your target in relation to your body position?
Are yousitting sideways or square to your target?
Are you 5'3" & shooting a 72" longbow?
Are you canting further than ususal?

It's natural to shoot high if you are shooting uphill or downhill.  Is your position creating either situation?

In the tree I shoot high and shot over 3 deer last year so I'm going to the ground. I can be a lot stiller sitting.
I have been sitting on a stool. When I sit dirrectly on the ground the limb hits the ground.
Have been sitting sideways to the target. Target is at about 24" high or so(hight of deer's heart).
6' tall and 64" recurve.
I'll check the cant tonight.

Sounds like it's just down to your change of perspective. All I can say really is keep practicing!

You have it all wrong.  You didn't shoot over three deer, they ducked.  Thats the story I would tell.

I also found when I sit I would shoot higher as well.  I just kept practicing and after a few sessions got dialed in.  You will find the same thing. Just keep at it and you will be ready come fall.

The shot should be the same sitting standing or from a tree stand. It should also be the same from 5' with NO target as it is from 15-20 yrds with a target reguardless if it's living or just a spot.

On game I found that for ME I needed to pick a real spot....hows your follow thru? Are you maintaing back tension THRU the shot?Don't stop aiming till your arrow stops moving,a solid bow arm even after the arrow has left is a must.

Good luck
Shoot straight and have FUN!!

Been working hard on alignment and follow through this winter. When I loose back tention the arrow goes all over so I know when I do it now.
Could it be head position?

sounds like you may be "peeking" to see the arrow after release or lifting your bow arm up..

When shooting from a tree stand sitting or standing you have too bend at the waist.Everything stays in line as you would as you were shooting at something straight ahead of you, then just bend at the waist.

John Schulz tells the story, either in his video or book - Straight Shooting of a friend who shot over a bear and didn't know why.  John's suggestion was that he cant the bow a lot more and this would eliminate that tendency.  Long story short - the guy did and it worked.  I find that also. When shooting sitting - butt on the ground, or sitting on my 3 legged stool, I shoot much better with the cant almost horizontal.

Try that and see if it helps.  I think the reason, at least for me is I get a better visual perspective of my arrow - as I shoot Hill - split vision.  Also, make sure your focus is on the target-spot and not on your arrow or back and forth.

Other than that keep your same form and practice from these various positions a lot.

For me I find if I do shoot high from a sitting position it is because of my head position. I usually did not cant my head enough with the bow. I have found for me, that whenever I use an extreme cant I'll miss high if my head is not properly lined up.
