I've just found my Buffalo bow...!
« on: July 20, 2008, 07:26:00 PM »
G'day all,

Well after landing back in Oz and settling in at home I was looking forward to getting knee deep in my workshop, you know the drill... working on arrows, strings and the prep of hunting kit.

When I was working on Danny's forgewoods I had the idea of weighing my PSAX widow on our digital bathroom scales. The method i used was a long length of timber, a small grove in the end where the string rests and then I pushed down to a small nail that I put in on a 30" mark, that being my draw.

I did all my bows just to see where they landed in comparison to what is written on the limbs. Most, if not all landed spot on and when averaged out after a few turns I found the weight was spot on. Not that I dont trust the folks at BlackWidow!

Getting back to the point of the thread, what was a suprise was my PSAX Osage that I had made a few years ago( I sold it and was lucky enough to be able to buy it back off the same fella) was that this bow in marked at 70# @ 28. After weighing it 4 times in a row it came in at a whopping 80.1#  .....   :saywhat:

When drawing the bow it always felt kind heavy at the end, now I know why!

So as the thead is titled... I've now got my Buffalo bow, all I need now is a few Buff for testing!

Oh and I think the bow's name now suits it hands down....."Discipline".

I'll post some pics when I can find my SLR.

It is funny you said that. I thought it was maybe just me but I can hardly tell the difference between my 74 and 83 when I draw them

Not to rain on your cyclone, but when you use that method you need to tare out the weight of the stick and your bow. Cheers, T

If that really is the case, that's a huge mistake...but, it could be a good one!

I thought about that Mr 7eyes, but I fail to see just how the weight of the bow and stick would matter as your pushing down upon the scale?

You maybe right though and I'm not real sure of how accurate my scale is, but the other 4 Trad bows all weighed in as they are marked. So that made me think is all.

Alkie,  no, you tare the weight. meaning subtract whaqt you lay on the scale before pulling down.

When I built my self bow I use a bathroom scale and I zero it out with the tillering stick & bow on the scale before I start pulling to the length for weight. 7eyes is right, You'll get a few extra #'s if you don't.. The scale will read the total weight + pulling weight.

I've seen lots of mismarked factory bows, I had two Martins, one was ten pounds under and the other was 13#'s OVER! I know of some folks ordering bows that specify that they be mismarked, such as guys going to Africa for dangerous game and knowing that they can't meet the energy specs, they just write in a poundage that will make it.
