'O'-ring for aiming

Just had an abstract thought;

I know a lot of English Longbow archers, here in the UK, use a rubber 'O'-ring slipped down the top limb as a sighting aid. The idea being that you slide the band to the correct placement on the limb & then line it up with the target.
The principle is so simple it's brilliant, infinitely adjustable, always there & cheap or free to replace. Does anyone else around the world do this, or is it a quintissentially 'English' thing?

(Personally I don't do it, just interested!  :D  )

Well, I don't shot sights and I cant imagine myself, using an o-ring on the upper limb, being usefull by any means. On the LOWER limb this might be different though ...
Note the two rings in this pic (from Elmer 1951) of a member of the Royal Company of Archers - shooting a Clout. In this case I can see the benefit of a reference point
     

BTW: I do like the Old English Style        Really would be something, to shoot a "true" Clout, over on the Island.

Never heard of it being used here, so maybe it is an English thing. Most shoots here do not allow any sights whatsoever on trad bows, so it would be illegal at a shoot. But it does sound like it would be useful, simple and effective if you wanted a sight.

Haven't seen it used in these parts, but neet idea.  One would need to shoot with the bow perpendicular though for it to work the best.  Most trad folks cant the bow.

That is a Good Starting Sign for the Wee Ones and the Beginners. Maybe Sut 2 'O' rings a Half Inch Apart so that the Arrows will Whack that Target!! Somewhere in Betwee, and let them Shoot that Way, Until they Do !!

Two fingers and it looks like that arrow could possibly have a complete pass through on his bow hand.  :eek:

Many people have used marks on the riser as aiming references. It's a great tool to use if an archer wants to begin learning their gaps...especially if they shoot with the bow vertical.
