Olympic archery
« on: August 12, 2008, 09:39:00 PM »
Not much of an olympic guy but glad I cought this. It was Korean women against Chineese women. Great to watch there forms. There anchor point was on there chin. The string was pulled dead center of there chin. I never did here how far they were shooting but it looked like the arrow took a while to get to the target. They were all shooting Samick RC bows with some kind of tripod stabilizer in front. They say the Korean are the ones to beat

Their under-the-chin anchor is called a target anchor.  Has been around forever for long range shooting.  It in effect lowers the rear sight.  The lower anchor also orients the bow/arrow in a more upward trajectory, enabling the archer to get more distance out of a particular sight setting.  I believe Olympic shooters are also limited to one sight pin.  Because Olympic bows are fairly lightweight and the shot distance is long, it would not be possible to set the one pin low enough (it would either be below the arrow or retard the arrow's flight) if they didn't anchor under their chin.

Go to nbcolympics.com. Find the list of sporting categories on the left hand side, click on archery, navigate around until you see the little "rewind" hyperlink.... Oh just go here   olympic videos   and pick your hi-def video coverage. Sorry to see the cutie from England, Alison Williamson, lose in the individual rounds. You could set your watch by how she shot. It was nice to see the Brit women bring back skirts to the sport and give it some class too. We still have a couple archers in the round of 8 yet!

Thanks for putting up the link!  I've been watching the men's individual, and really hoped the Mexican kid would win (I don't know if he's a kid, but he looks young).

I can't believe Sunghyun Park lost in the Women's individual finals. Chinese competitor Juanjuan Zhang beat all 3 of the Korean competitors en-route to the gold! Interestingly all of the Korean women posted their lowest scores of the competition in their matches against Zhang, do you think they got rattled by the home crowd? Didn't seem to be a factor in the team competition though.

Watched the mens individual final today.  The precision at 70 meters is remarkable.  Makes me feel like a real duffer.      :archer:

I notice that they all shoot split-fingered, rather than 3-under.  Is this an olympic / FITA rule, or is there some other reason?

if they did 3 under the arrow will on their chin's, split fingers puts the finger on the chin. I think that's for a cleaner release.
