Selfbow help please
« on: August 13, 2008, 10:25:00 AM »
I have a selfbow that I made last year at MOJAM.
I want to reduce poundage and draw length from 60#'s @28" to 50#'s @26"s. The bow is a 60" ntn sinew backed selfbow. Where do I start on the reduction?

cut it down in length then re-tiller it to 50#@26" or you can just fix the tillering to come out 50#@26"

I wouldn't cut it down any.  That bow is probably around 55# at 26".  You won't need to remove too much material from the belly to drop it down to 50# @26".  Get a sharp scraper and take an equal number of full length scrapes from each limb, excercise the limbs and check the weight.  Repeat until you're about 52#, then sand.  Or do the same process starting with 80 grit sandpaper instead of the scraper... it'll take longer, but it'll get you there.

I agree with Jeremy. You are not far off from 50#@26" where you are now. If you use a scraper, take about 10 full length scrapes off of each limb, exercise it well(pull it 20 to 30 times gradually working it out to 26")and check the weight. If 10 scrapes is reducing it quickly take only 5 scrapes off next time before exercising and weigh it.
If the tiller is good on the bow now, you may only need to scrape down the center of each limb to reduce the weight. Take your time, concentrate on the wood removal and check the weight often. By exercising between scraping you will see the positive effects of the wood removal. You can always remove more wood if needed but it is very difficult to put it back on.         Pat

IMHO the bow is probably closer to 52-53@26, if it's 60@28

A simple light sanding of the belly should do the trick.

Did you weight it on a good scale?

Good luck,

Definitely weigh it before you do anything.  Seems to me that marked weight isn't always the same as actual weight  :)

You may have some opportunities to make it a more efficient bow by narrowing it rather than thinning it.  Got any more specs; like width etc.?

I would leave it as is!

Check the actual weight at 26"...
If you want to reduce the weight do as PatB said.

Almost all selfbows loose 2 or 3 three pounds during shoot-in. Check the poundage before you scrape. The problem with full length scrapes is you will almost always throw the tiller off a little because you will gouge a little deeper in some places no matter how hard you try not to.

You can drop the poundage the quickest by removing just a little wood from the fades. I use a palm sander when I work on the fades to drop poundage.

Thank you guys. That's why I asked you guys to get the various options.  I wil try scraping a little ate the fades and be real careful. I guess the belly should be worked and not the sides?   The bow has a good tiller as it is right now. Just want to tinker a little. Tinkering seems like it always bites me in the butt if you know what I mean.  Just a little tighter or little sharperalways gets me.
Thanks guys, I'll let you all know how it worked later this fall.  Right now I'm planning on using my new Dryad next month on bear. hunt.
another question  Which of these fishing sounds the best?          We will be fishing out of Grand Marais, MN while on our bear hunt.
