Colorado unit 62
« on: August 21, 2008, 08:30:00 AM »
Some of my friends and I are contemplating hunting unit 62 in September. I know the Divide road gets a lot of traffic, bordering the draw unit 61 trophy area. Does anyone have any suggestions on beating the crowd in unit 62? I'm not up to any long distance hiking- a mile at most. We will have an ATV for retrieving game if we should be so lucky as to shoot something in an accessible area. Elk is the main target, but we'll have deer licenses too.

Don, when are you going, I may be there first part of Sept, hunting the same area. I have a friend from here that has been in Co. for a couple of months and has found some elk and some camping spots for us. We will be in unit 62.

Hogdancer, we're still trying to decide. It will either be the first week or the last. Seems like obligations have a way of cropping up just when we think we have it settled. I should know within a couple of days. My vote is for the first week, before they get run all over the country, but our time will be cut short by obligations on both ends of the time we have. Can't leave before the 30th, have to be back by the 7th. The last week follows the muzzleloaders, which can't be good for our hunting.

I am thinking of leaving on the 2nd, if stuff does'nt come up, I know what you mean about obligations, Keep in touch and if we are around the same area we'll have to meet up for a cup of coffee or something !

62 is one of the busiest OTC units I've heard of and you aren't allowed to take ATV's off approved trails for game retrieval.

Hogdancer, if it looks like we'll be there at the same time, I'll get in touch. It would be kind of funny to meet you in Colorado when we only live about 30 miles apart!

Kadbow, we won't use the ATV for anything but approved trails. They can come in handy when the years get long.

bloodyarrow, thanks for the info. That sounds like a place I've been before about 10 years ago, but too much water under the bridge to remember for sure.

I'm hoping we can find an area away from the divide road, as far from the maddening crowds as we can get. My buddy who lives in town has been using Google Earth to search- I have dial-up and can't get it.

PS- Dial-up is "traditional" internet. I could get satellite, but I'm afraid I would lose my amateur standing.

Dang it! Just found out we have to postpone CO until next year. Those obligations got too big to ignore.

Maybe Nebraska in October... that place where we turkey hunted and saw all those deer.
