What do you take on stand
« on: August 24, 2008, 06:04:00 PM »
This will be my first trad season so today I'm thinking of what I will take on stand with me.
1. My bow
2. Dogware quiver
3. ? will I need and extra glove
4. ? will I need a range finder/ I'm good to 20yrds
5. I will be hunting from Lone Wolf climbing sticks and a tree saddle.
Where I'm going with this is that one of the attractions to trad hunting is "keeping it simple"
In the past I had a 20# back pack with all of my "stuff"
So what you do carry on stand that I might need.

1. my bow, quiver and arrows
2. my glove
3. water
4. licence
5. binos
6. my knife
7. a whistle
and thats about it.
in my opinion you only need the extra glove if you cant stand to shoot without one and you dont need a range finder just shoot when you feel comfortabe with the shot.
Aim small, miss small

I dont miss i give warning shots

Well I've been thinking some more (raining outside)
Flashlight
I carry a first aid kit
pull rope it get the bow up
something to hang the bow on
cell phone
The older I get the more mortal I feel...

It looks like I will still need a back pack maybe smaller

Bow
Quiver/arrows
Arm guard
tab
Fannny pack with:
Rope/para cord(for pulling up bow)
Safety harness
Folding saw
Clippers
Compass
Screw-in hanger
Knife
Wind checker
Lighter
Flashlight
Binoculars
Water
Bleat call
Cell phone
gloves/facemask
White flagging tape (For marking blood trails)
If its really hot out I also take a wet wash cloth in a zip lock bag
I know that this seems like a lot, but everything on my list gets used often. I probably missed something.

David
PS I did miss something...A snack...Toting all that stuff in made me hungry...

I like the wash cloth in the zip lock good idea
I've always used the realtree bow hanger, will this work with a longbow?

I always have a few different sizes of zip ties.  They are handy for attaching a tag to the deer or fastening various things together...Mike

I've had no issues using the hangar with a recurve. It would probably work even better with a longbow.
Canacope? Oh. yeah...cantaloupe...I told you i was getting hungry...

Small packpack containing; Knife/saw combo, deer drag, wet wipes, plastic bag, 2 bottles water, rubber gloves, hand/toe warmers(if cold), flashlight and sandwich/snacks.

In the words of an Army Ranger, "It's better to have and not need than to need and not have".  I too try the minimalist approach.  However some things you can't do without.  I leave my field dressing equipment in my van.  I figure the walk back to the van to get it gives the deer the time it needs and clears my head for the tracking job coming up.  I also take TP (toilet paper) with me.  Sometimes the van is just too far away.  But yah, bow, arrows (4), water, snacks, binos, and some extra layers (i.e. hat, gloves and socks).  Good Luck!

I take everything including the kitchen sink.  I take two of everyting except bows.  I ususally drop something from the stand.  Good news is I have only dropped my bow once.

Typical midwest whitetail hunting. . .I use a turkey vest for my gear- always organized for the entire season and in the same place. Grab my bow, stand, and vest- I am off. . .

In my vest:
-16" saw in back of vest
-pruners
-small head-flashlight/extra batteries
-chapstick
-marking tape
-2 screw-in bow hangers
-bow tow strap (not rope- 1/4" strap does not tangle)
-25' small twine/rope
-mini-kit with xtra string, glove, tape, rubber bands, lighter, cotton balls/vaseline, whistle, etc. (all together the size of cigarette pack)
-license, latex gloves
-2 small chemical hand warmers
-Ziplocks
-wetwipes
-climbing/work gloves
-compass/maps (sometimes gps)
- For cold:  extra neck gaitor, tight/light wool cap (for extra warmth),glove liners, (some cases an extra pair of socks)

On self:
-knife and leatherman on my belt
-turkey and deer call around neck
-binocs on harness
