Black Widow ????
« on: September 02, 2008, 09:24:00 AM »
I have a PSAX 55@28" for you guys who shoot widows, can you give your recomended brace height that you have found to be most effective?

Does anyone us limb savers to help quiet the bow? if so where do you place them on the limbs for them to work the best?

will the adhesive effect the finish on my limbs?

doeboy,  my PSA's brace heights are set at 8&5/8's" which seems to work best for me. Have'nt tried the limb savers.  I thought my bows were noisy to until I had a friend shoot them and stoood next to him while he did.  I honestly did'nt think they were that bad.  Hope this helps.

I have a PMAX and it was pretty noisy. I put a B50 string on it and a 9" brace and it is so much quieter and lost most of the hand buzz. It really didn't like the FF string it had on it(I will try others just didn't have one here the right length yet)

Another thing that while not Trad to some that works miracles on this bow is shooting it with a stabilizer on it. Can hardly hear it at all with one on. (just don't know if I can bring myself to leave one on it LOL)

I have mine at 8.5 to 8.625" and to get mine quiet I like a Mountain Muffler string. However they are getting hard to get so I think there are alternatives that work just fine. The noise I notice comes from the string hitting the limb at the string groove. So you can wrap the string for the first 4-6" with a good thick yarn or add stick on moleskin to that area of the limb. I bet you could do both if you wanted.

I have had a number of bows but the BW design suits me best of all. If you really consider what is going on with the reverse limb mounting you can see more room for the bulky clothing we wear when hunting. Also this winds up being a very forgiving concept reducing a lot of shooter induced torq. The limb is a tried and true design and will perform well under a lot of conditions. On my trip to Alaska my bow was rained on for 3 days and on the last day helped me make a 20 plus yard shot on a caribou. I know God helped guide my arrow that day but I was still impressed with the Widows SUV performance.

Just my opinion.

also 8 1/2 on my 60" psa and pga. have goten both as quiet as any recurve I have owned. I shoot 10gpp and d97 but put moleskin on the limb tips and split my cat wiskers where there are 4 smaller ones on the string. On my PGA I found that a strap on great northern quiver does wonders. I guess the straps around the riser  acts like a dampner

All of the PSAs I've owned liked a 8-5/8" brace height.  Although I love the look of the spider silencers I was never impressed with their ability to silence a string.  I like a simple catwhisker with an overhand knot.  You can slide it up and down the string easily and use it to fine tune noise as well as arrow flight.  I tried the calf hair silencers in the grooves, but they kept sliding around on me...Mike

My TFX is at 8 5/8, with Bow Hush and Hush Puppies, also Limbsavers at the fades, with a bow quiver.  Bow is quiet, I killed 4 deer and 3 hogs with it last year.   I did have a nice buck jump the string last year, causing a clean miss.  Not bow's fault - operator error (don't shoot when they are looking at you).   My SAs are set at 8 3/4, with Hush Puppies, Bow Hush, bow quivers, but no Limsavers.  Also quiet.  All bows are 58", around 55 at 28"

Where does the "fade" begin on the limbs of the black widow?

I dont think the bow is loud as such, but i do want it as quiet as possible.Never no when you need a second chance!!! lol

Looking at the limb from the side on an SA, the wedge starts the the end limb towards the middle of the bow - away from the tip or string end.  The wedge "fades" to nothing in about 6 to 7 inches.   I put the limbsavers on the belly of the bow (the side toward the shooter), just before the wedge "fades" to nothing.  I hope that helps.
