Help with arrows for Silvertip
« on: September 09, 2008, 04:53:00 PM »
Needing some advice on aluminium arrows with my new Silvertip when I get it.  It will be 55@28, I draw 28 3/4, I was thinking 2020's or maybe 2117's.  Does that sound about right.  I'll probly shoot a 29 3/4 or 30 inch shaft.
Thanks,
Tom

Tadpole,

I have 2 Silvertip recurves, both with FF strings. Based on my experience, and on advice from Dave, for a 30" arrow you are probably going to need an arrow shaft that spines at least 90-94# (with a 125-gr head) if you have the FF option. Dave's bows are cut past center (3/16" if I remember correctly) and take a much heavier spine (by 15-20#) than what the general equation for length past 28" and a FF string  would suggest (5# increase for each). The only experience that I have with aluminums are 2219, 2315 and 2317. I would say a 2219 shaft will be what you'll need; 2315s would probably be OK too, but I prefer the narrower and heavier 2219.

Hope this helps.
Jeff

Any 400 carbon would work on that too.

Steve O, what kind of carbons do you shoot through your Silvertips?

Aluminum, I would try a 2117 shaft and see what it bare shafted like. 2117s spine at .400.  If it is too weak, try a 2216.  I would also suggest a .400 spine carbon.  With your stats for arrow length and draw weight, I would start with about 150gr - 175gr up front on the carbons.

55#@28" drawing 29 1/2" Fast Flight.

I haven't seen a difference between regular or skinny axis/fmj type arrows.

30" 400s with 125g heads

Full length 340s with 125g heads or 30 1/2" for 250-60g heads.

These will all shoot broadheads w/bare shafts to 20 yards out of both my Silvertips.

Tom;
2020 or maximum 2117 will shoot great out of that setup.

Not trying to make it more difficult but try a 2018 as well. Small diameter and bomb proof with good weight. They should be real nice out of that tip.

I personally shoot Cedars but have tried Grizzly sticks and they have a huge varience in spine weight and fly nice with alot of heavy impact on target. I have shot 5 or 6 bucks with them and have gotten a complete pass through every time, even using a 50# longbow once.

I think I'll try the 2020's first, thanks Sergio!

Tadpole I have a 57 lbs @ 29 inch Silvertip so it's very similar to yours and I tried 2117s with it but they seemed a bit weak in spine.  I went to 2216's and they flew perfectly.  You may want to try them too if you have some.  This year I've been shooting Beman 340's cut to 30 inches with 100 gr brass inserts and 125 tips and broadheads.  Excellent flight and I seem to be able to shoot them a little better than my 2216's.  Just some ideas to try.  Good hunting, Rick.

If it helps, I have a 55@29" Silvertip and I draw 28.5".  2216's with 145gr points worked very well for me.

I shoot 2020's out of mine and it is 61 @ 29". I just got some grizzly sticks and was wowed by how they shot. Heavy but they fly great!
