Ground blind set-up for deer
« on: September 10, 2008, 11:44:00 AM »
Anxious to give my new penthouse blind a go this season.

Have heard you should set-up a week in advance ? ....or is it ok to set-up same day ?

How do deer react to open windows VS shoot thru etc ?

This thing is real easy to pack, set-up and brush in with tons of room inside !

If you're in the woods, where they won't be seeing the blind from a distance, I'd brush it in...mesh works better for deer unless you really get it brushed in well. I have used both same day sets and advance sets with great results...

If you have the netting I would use it. Just from my experience deer do not like the black holes.

I agree with the up about brushing it in.

If you do not have more the one ground blind setup I would go ahead and get it out there as early as possible and leave it.

Mesh is a must for deer in my area, it's a good Idea to practice shooting through it so you can get use to it. I had good luck the same day when I brushed the blind in, what I did was to pick out my locations in advance and have my brush in material there in advance, it helped speed up my setups. The roof line is the most important part to get brushed in good, I liked to set up under a hemlock and let the branches lay on the roof, that is the setup that worked for me last season when I shot my buck.

I have a penthouse, I leave the window open, dont like the nets. Deer and turkey dont seem to notice. If possible, I like to set up a day in advance, put have put up and down in one day, deer looked at it a couple of times, then went on around it. The main thing is to stay back in the shadow without the netting, wear black or olive drab, solid colors.

I have found that you need to put it out a couple days in advance. I used my blind to hunt woodchucks and when the deer came by the got nervous about this new shape in the woods. Just my .02.
