Good starting Point/ Carbon Arrow Gurus' Needed

With a Black Widow Longbow (cut to center/ not beyond) pulling 48 lbs. @ 28 , I'll be pulling 28.5'  so I'd say about 50 lbs. give or take 1 lbs....  What carbon arrow would you start with for tuning...

I shoot 3 fingers under with a nock point generally around 7/8

If I shoot Gold Tip Traditionals Where would you start?

If I were to shoot Carbon Express Heritage, where would you start?

How long and how much weight up front?

I'd love to have a good hunting arrow weighting around 500 gr.

If this is acheiveable how would you do it?

I'll shoot whatever weight head I have to, but I can add the little weight adaptor thingy's to the rsp inserts also...

If you're going to cut them down, you'll probably be fine with a .500spine (so the 3555GT's or the 150 CX) with a standard insert and broadhead, if you leave them full length, you may get away with a .400 spine (5575GT or 250CX), but you'll need to really weight up the tip to offset the stiffer spine - easily 250+ grains up front.  I wouldn't cut down the .400's until you got them flying well...

My 2cents worth. I would use the Heritage 150s at least 30 inches long. I think the 3555's are only 20" full length which is shorter than I would like with a 29" draw. Obviously, bareshafting will tell you what weight you will need but I would guess you'll need 200+ in order to get them to bareshaft well. This will easily give you a 500+gr arrow.

Just as a comparison, I shoot the 150's from a 54@30" JK Kanati, cut to center. I shoot 31" arrows with 150 grains up front. Total weight ~510gr.

Unless you just don't like longer arrows, don't hesitate to shoot arrows longer than 30". The added length will soften the spine easier than adding weight. Of course if you want to front load them, you can do that as well.

Don't worry about FOC, concern yourself with bareshaft results and/or arrow flight. I can only guess, but 150gr up front just seems to light with the specs you gave. I think you will need closer to 250gr.

I think your FOC will take care of itself if you go through the bareshafting process.

I shoot a 54 @27 longbow and my axis 500's were too stiff when cut to 28, even with 100 gr insert and 200 gr point. I've gone to the epic 600 cut to 28 with 15 inches of 8ppi weight tube up front and a 200 gr point(they do not make a brass insert for the epic yet)This gives me a 540 gr arrow.

Right now I'm shooting GT3555 out of a 45# bear grizzly that I'm pulling back to 45#'s, the shaft is cut to 29.5 from throat of the nock to the end of the shaft then I have a 50 gr brass insert and my broadhead setup is 160 gr, the total weight is 450 grs. I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination but if you were to go with 3555's your going to have to keep your point weight low and use weight tubes to get up to a good weight arrow.

I am draw 28 1/4 inch and the bow is 50 lb recurve checkmate firebird, the bemen or easton that I have used are the 500 spine and have the arrows cut at 29 1/2 inch long. I am using a 125 gr point, I also add to the inside of the shaft 1/8 inch poly rope to increase the overall total arrow weight.

I think the .500 spine shafts will require 175-250 total up front if left pretty long.

When I was shooting 50#, I usually had to go to .500 spine if I cut my arrows and .400 spine if I left them full-length or thereabouts...that's with a 29-1/4" draw length and 100 gr. points.

Yep, 35/55's with 100gr insert and 125gr tip may get you what you are looking for, but I do know that a 28in arrow setup weighs 485grs, so if you can leave them a little longer, may get to 500, but with your slightly longer draw, you may not be able to add that much tip weight and still spine correctly with an arrow long enough for you to shoot.  Just gotta try a few setups.  Mark
