Anyone out there use mock scrapes?
« on: September 25, 2008, 08:19:00 PM »
Was considering giving the old scrape dripper a try and am looking for some first hand experiences either good or bad.

Thanks

I used one a whole season a few years ago.  The scrap always had fresh tracks in it but I never saw a deer use it.  I had a brother in law that shot a decent buck off a mock scrap.

Did a little expirement last year around Halloween during the pre rut. I made a mock scrape along a logging road and took a whiz in it myself, I then placed a camera at the scrape and got pics of 13 different bucks hittin my scrape within 24 hours. I believe curiousity started a chain reaction cause that scrape was hit non stop for weeks. However did't use the dripper. Killed a nice 8pt on it Nov 7th.

I've had quite a bit of experience  with mock scrapes and this is what  I have found.  Pay attention please.

We trick ourselves into thinking that rubber boots and gloves and paying attention to the wind while doctoring the scrapes will keep our scent out of the area.  WRONG.  We keep going back to see if bucky has visited the scrape and we treat it with scent to get him to come back (which is at night by the way).  The more we go back the more we educate him that we are there.  He will keep coming for a while to check the scrape but probably not during the daytime, unless he is a young deer.

If you use a mock scrape make sure you don't treat it TOO EARLY.  I have had pretty good luck waiting until October 20th to even go out and try it. I do not hunt prior to this date and have seen some good bucks by passing up the first part of the season this way.

Get yourself a quality scent (Scrape Gel or Lethal  Weapon by James Valley Scents) are nearly perfect but don't use them before October 20th.
