First time in Yooper country, beautiful!!!
« on: October 12, 2008, 08:47:00 PM »
Just got back from hunting in the KeeWeenaw area in the  U.P. in Michigan.
Weather was in the mid 40s, peak fall season for color change, stayed at a cabin on Lake Superior near Lac LaBelle, what a gorgeous area!!!!!!

I would move from Louisiana to the U.P. in a heartbeat if it weren't for two thing.  No cajun food and 30 feet of snow a year.  I think this whole   "Global warming" thing skipped them all together.

yup, that was a beartrap.  Only had 3 evenings to hunt in the UP, the one I was after was hitting the bait, but doing it in the middle of the night.  Friend of mine got a 300 pounder two days prior.
Grouse hunting was good and did some small mouth bass fishing on the lake as well.

I have a camp up there in Menominee county. I have hunted there every year since 1992.Have killed some very fine bucks up there and the best part is that every day is opening day, absolutely no pressure even during gun season.

I'll be heading to the western end of the U.P. in Ironwood the beginning of November to visit my parents and brother, and of course, hunt whitetails!

I'd love to move back there. My parents are selling their home which is situated on 29 acres with a nice trout pond and stream, and resident deer, bear, turkey and other small game. Just can't convince my wife to move there, though she likes the area. She's just lived here all her life, and here parents are here.....

Here's a couple of does near our Lake Superior camp:

Dang! I can't wait to get back into that country!

The UP is one of the main reasons I love Michigan.  It's still my favorite place to hunt.

Yup, full buckskin, with a rabbit fur mad bomber hat, the ear flaps came in handy.  Holding my Pronghorn longbow. Wearing elk skin mocs on my feet, too.

No cajun food but did you at least try pasties?

Well, I brought up there with me the following: boudin, seafood gumbo, a tur-duc-en, crawfish etouffe, and lump crabmeat to make and au-gratin.
However, we only cooked that in Saginaw for the two days I was there.  I had to eat the local food in the U.P.

Funny you should ask about pasties.  At first I saw a sign that said Pasties and Smoked Fish.  I thought you could see strippers while eating whitefish.  Did not realize the "A" made the AHH sound.
And yes, I ate one....I told my friends  it would be much much better if it was stuffed with shrimp, take out the potato and rhudebarb (whatever that beet thing is) add rice, onion, garlic, celery and deep fry it!!!

Rutabaga, Dave.  If it weren't for rutabaga, it wouldn't REALLY be a Pasty.  Long trip for you going South to North....couldn't get much further.

I love the U.P. I have always wanted to live there, and I don't mind snow. I just didn't want to take a job a yooper could use.
