Doc Ashby, Again thanks for all your work.  You are certainly my inspiration to start forging, quenching, and tempering my own heads due to the lack of weight and hardness in the heads I was using.  Having a great grinder helps eliminate spending $60 for a file...course the grinder is considerably more  :)  tippit

They want more for shipping than the cost of the file!  Frustrating to order online as many buisnesses don't "get" that USPS is the way to go, cheaper and often more reliable.

Tippit, et all,

In light of our gratitude to "Doc Ashby", and all his hard work and sharing, perhaps I could plug a prayer on Prayer/Concerns forum for his trip stateside and having to use the VA system to see about this ongoing back problem that hasn't healed...

Man could use our prayers for sure

Hey guys, I found a great deal on this file after I payed 39.52

It's a Nicholson Superior milled curved tooth file, 12" flexible standard #20138 it has holes in both ends so you can attache it to a piece of wood keeping the file stationary and moving the Grizzly down the length of it maintaining a constant angle.

I bought a few extra so if you want one I can get it to you for 25.00 delivered, just PM me.

I call this file the Grizzly tamer.

I put a piece of wood at the end so it catches on the edge of my bench, you can really take off some metal quick setting your new bevel easily.

Get the Nicholson. PERIOD.
Otherwise you will end up buying 2. the cheap one and the Nicholson you bought after wasting time and energy with the cheap one.
It's all in the metal. I found it stated that the older ones with the black diamond stamp were W1 steel and the newer ones are 1095.
the copies...???? who knows. The heat treatment???
IMHO

Ed -- Through all of this extremely informative and interesting thread, seeing all of your as-usual very thoughtful and informed posts, I keep marveling at how you can do this when in so damn much pain, just days away from major major back surgery ... can you even sit upright to type? Doctor brother Ashby, you are a true and stoic hero! Likewise if no so acutely, Sharpster suffers ongoing severe pain, yet never flags in bis enthusiasm to help produce and promote broadheads that kill fast and humanely no matter what the hit -- more humane, less wounded and lost game, higher hunter success. Me, if I have a headache I can hardly function and gthe whining can be heard for miles. You  both are heroes.  :clapper:  Dave
