testing done...wow
« on: October 18, 2008, 03:55:00 PM »
i finished my testing on my snuffers and i'm here to tell ya these things are tough as can be after i put them through a very hard shooting.shot trees, drum, even a rockpile of river rock...after heating them until they have the powdery coat on them i dipped them in my secret sauce(gonna ask my boss if i can disclose this) i then heat them one more time and dip in ice cold water until cool.still got a bent tip after a direct hit into a granite slab but overall good results.they sharpened right back up on the diamond stones i placed at 18 degrees on block.just wish i could figure out how to make one from plow steel.i am sure they would be very hard to bend.  :wavey:

So you're hardening them?

Won't tell a man what to do but there are several places that will heat-treat knife blades for knifemakers.  If you call Magnus and ask real nicely what metal they use...or if they'll at least tell you what "class" the metal is in.  You could send one a dozen or two to a place like that and tell them you want them at 53Rc or 59Rc.  (Or a few of each if you want to find out where they get brittle.)  Past 59Rc they're gonna be a PITA to sharpen.

Could you tell for sure they were harder than factory?

Got pictures of you stone setup?  The one thing that keeps me from staying with 3 blades is the issues in getting the angles below 30.  I've seen several contraptions but I can't "see" how the very tip gets sharpened at <30*.

yes ...quite a bit harder...this method of hardening is a method used in the fabrication of mining equipment for rock quarries etc..very effective. plow steel on the other hand is very, very hard.so hard it has to be heated to put an effective weld on it.thats the goal i have in my sights...to have a broadhead that won't bend on impact   :campfire:

ahhhhh the tip.i run the tip in a circular motion on a flat diamond stone then hit 18 degree a few more strokes.no pics but its pretty simple to set up just need two stones and a block of wood and some shim material and glue

I too would like to know. Bet you could use the same process on the ww? Might solve some of the probs associated with them. Let us know what your boss says. I would also like to know a little more about the process. Thanks.
