No good pic of the bow and arrow........but this home made clovis point was shot on a home made wood arrow (to which it was hafted with sinew from a deer I shot) from a 67# home made osage selfbow with a home made linen string.  The deer only made it 20-30 yards after a shot through both lungs and the point lodged in the off shoulder (thats how it broke loose).

i just cant seem to connect with my trad setup. Everytime i went scouting i had deer not more than 10' from my stand, when i take my trad gear they are way past 30yds at least. I guess im gonna have to change my game plan, cuz im running outta time here!
I plan on making a dozen cedar arrows with flint heads here soon. I found a nice stand of arrow wood (Viburnum dentatum) the other day while i was hunting on public land. may have to go check some of that out.

That brings up another question. Is the total primitive setup limit you on range? With a 40 or 50# bow with stone points effective out to 30 yds or is it a more inside 20 yds type setup?

I like to shoot at game at 'point on' distance or less. With the light poundage bow above, I prefer to shoot 15 yds or less. But it is only about 38#. With my glass bow and heavier arrows I would shoot out to 20 yds.

Here's what I could find on Louisiana archery hunting:

L. ARCHERY SEGMENT: Still hunting only Oct. 1-Jan. 31 in all deer hunting areas, EXCEPT Areas 3
and 8 where the season will be Sept. 20 - Jan. 15, and Area 6 where the season will be Oct. 1-15 for bucks
only and Oct. 16 - Feb. 15 for either-sex. WMA seasons are the same as outside except as noted below. An
archery license is required for resident bow hunters between the ages of 16 and 59 inclusive and nonresidents
16 years of age and older. Either-sex deer may be taken in all areas open for deer hunting EXCEPT
when a bucks only season is in progress for gun hunting and EXCEPT in Area 6 from Oct. 1-15. In such
cases, archers must conform to the bucks only regulations. Either-sex deer may be taken on WMAs at
anytime during archery season EXCEPT when bucks only seasons are in progress on the respective WMA.
Also, archery season restricted on Atchafalaya Delta, Salvador, Lake Boeuf and Pointe-aux-Chenes WMAs.
(See WMA for details).
Bow and Arrow Regulations: Longbow, compound bow and crossbow or any bow drawn, held or released
by mechanical means will be a legal means of take for all properly licensed hunters. Bow and arrow
fishermen must have a sport fishing license and not carry any arrows with broadhead points unless
a big game season is in progress.
IT IS UNLAWFUL:
1. To carry a gun including those powered by air or other means while hunting with bow and arrow
during the special bow and arrow deer season EXCEPT, it is lawful to carry a .22 caliber rimfire pistol
loaded with #12 shot (ratshot) only.
2. To have in possession or use any poisoned or drugged arrow or arrows with explosive tips.
3. To hunt deer with a bow having a pull less than 30 pounds.
10
For the latest hunting season updates, visit our website:
 www.wlf.louisiana.gov
4. To hunt with a bow or crossbow fitted with an infrared, laser sight, electrically operated sight or
device specifically designed to enhance vision at night (does NOT include non-projecting red dot
sights; RS 56:116.1.(b)(4)).

thanks george. I had read that but was almost positive you had to hunt with steel points here.

Ian has got me doubting now, I'll have to ask a game warden.

Swamp Pygmy, The law was changed in 2006. The word metal was dropped from the description of legal broadhead to reflect the change.
