will he come back?
« on: October 19, 2008, 09:33:00 PM »
hey guys. i just got done hunting, and i hadnt seen anything all nite, untill 5 mins. till dark. i figured there wasnt much time left, so i would use my buck call. when i grunted, all heck broke loose. a monster 9 or 10 pointer came tearing out of the woods into the corn field, looking 4 a fight. he was walking rite at me. he looked rite at me. we had about a 3 min. stare-off. he finally started walking closer. but then he scenced my presence, and all i saw was a white tail running off into the woods.
so my question is, even though i scared him tonite.... will he come back tomarrow.....or ever?

I would hunt a different stand for a couple of nights.
Its not the size of the animal you hunt that matters. Its how you hunt the animal.

Hunt nearby but in a different tree.  Note the wind direction and try to duplicate the situation.  To answer the question, no he will probably avoid that spot from now on, but he will still be moving about nearby.  He will just sidestep that stand location.  I had a similar situation this year. 10 days ago I had a big buck come head on to my tree.  I could not get a favorable shot and he eventually busted me.  Now tonight I saw him again.  I was watching from a different stand.  He went right down the same trail as before, only this time when he got near where I had the original encounter with him, he became cautious and sidestepped the the area.  If I had been in my original stand I would have never seen him even though he was within forty yards of it.  It was very interesting to watch this happening.  He thinks I don't know it, but I've got a little plan up my sleve for him!

I had a 150 class 10 point spot me one frosty December morning in South Texas.  He was intent on his female companion but when I drew he saw me and bolted about 30 yds. out (I was shooting wheels back then).  He then crossed a shooting lane about 30 yds out in front of me and I shot at him and missed low (that's another loooong story).  Anyway, the outfitter said he would never come back that way again so we moved the tripod about 40 yds. further down.  The next evening he came back to that very spot I missed him and if I had not moved the stand I would have had a 20 yd. broadside shot.

My point is each deer is different and just because he busted you this time doesn't mean he won't return.  I'd give it a coupe of days and go back.  Use a decoy or some estrus scent.  Who knows... he might just come back.

Good luck.

Slight chance he might, but he knows where your stand is now, and he will look up there again. Move your stand maybe 30 yards to where you think he might come by.

He didn't get big by making mistakes. I'd move a ways too.
