truckstop archery...
« on: October 21, 2008, 10:09:00 PM »
Thought I'd tell you guys a story that I think is a good'n.
Normally, I stop for the evening or weekend in a truckstop and shoot tennis balls or a nerf football. If, I have internet; I post a message as I did last weekend: and try to meet and shoot with 'Gang members.
Last nite, I was in Baltimore,MD. A fellow driver, who has shot with me before, met me as I pulled the brakes. His first words were 'hey, get yer bow out and lemme shoot it'...
'OK', says I. And, we commence to shootin' trash against the bank.
By the time we were done; I had 12 drivers hangin' around, talkin' and shootin' !! Each sayin' 'I wanna shoot that bow, or that one...
 I carry with me:
Red Wing Hunter 58" and 50/28,
Snakey 68" hickory longbow 44/28,(Bill Grenoble)
and new this week: Brushpopper 64" longbow 52/27 (George Stout)
When all was said and done, 5 drivers came to me with pen and paper; wanting to write down info on what they should buy as their first bow...
So, when you see one of those BIG trucks go by, giv'em a wave. Might just be a bow in that truck.  :wavey:

My good friend Alan, that drives across country, just had James Parker make him a takedown so he could carry it with him on the road. Maybe they can get a truck stop 3D circuit going.      Pat

Life is what you make of it.  Some in your situation might decide that shooting trad is just too difficult.  No time to practice, etc, etc.  You show that where there is a will there is a way.  Great job!

Great post! When I was trucking, I carried my compound and target with me all the time. Had it hanging on the back wall of the sleeper. Got DOT'd one time in Truckee, and the DOT guy asked me if I had any weapons in the truck. When I told him yes, and that I had the compound hanging on the back wall, he tried to make an issue of it. What an ace huh? Good ol' California.

But anyway, I used to shoot in the truckstops all the time. Seemed to always draw a few interested spectators that marveled at archery. My shooting forays even led to a few nice invites to hunt some land that I only wish I had time to check out. Invites included ranches in Colorado, Montana, and Idaho. Man that would have been awesome!

Enjoy your travels and stay safe. And thanks for being a goodwill ambassador for our favorite sport.

that is a great hobby for truckers. They can get out of the truck anywhere alone and do it.

There aren't that many hobbies like that. I can't picture truckers getting out and playing hacky sack or something. And your not going to hit a few Titleists into the woods. That'll get expensive quick.

I've been off the road for over 10 years now but I used to do that, too. I thought I was the only weird one.   :)
