Working day shift and trying to deer hunt is hard
« on: October 24, 2008, 07:06:00 AM »
I guess I have been spoiled for along time because I worked a 7 days on 7 days off then 7 nights on 7 nights off shift for 20 years. I could hunt three good weeks out of each month.

Even when I was on nights I would get off a 8am, Eat a big breakfast then stalk into my climbing stand with a good rail, Take a couple hour nap then be up for the mid-day deer activity.I shot deer and turkeys on the way in and soon after getting into the stand and at mid-day, It worked great.

Since getting hurt in May at work they have put me on day shift and boy it's tuff to find the time to hunt. I'm not venting because I am very, very lucky to even be able to hunt and I have injoyed every minute I get to spend in the woods.

How do you guy's and gals on day shift find your time to spend in the woods? Just cuorius   :D   and I want to wish everybody a great season   :archer:

When our late Blacktail season opens in mid November I pray for wind storms and heavy snow to keep me home from work.     :banghead:

Tracy... I worked 9-6 A.M. for fifteen years. Didn't care for it much. It did, however, allow me a certain hunting freedom and much more.

Don't know how I ever got ANYTHING done when I had a day job. Was a slave to weekends and vacation days.

I guess having a day job is better than having no job at all... unless you're retired.

8-5 for me.  During daylight savings time I can go straigt to hunting from work and still get in a two hr hunt.  That time grow shorter as the days get shorter as well. Never have time to hunt mornings except on weekends.

My plans this afternoon is to be in stand by 5:20 and hunt till dark.  6:50ish.  Just have to be quiet going in.  Thats one very reason I bought my Lone Wolf climber bout 5 yrs ago.  It allowed be to be quiet and stealthy.  The last teestand I had would have never allowed me to hunt like this.

After daylight saving time ends,  Its weekends only  :(  and what Vac time I have managed to save.  Normally try get a full week of Mid-Nov. (the rut) and doing nothing but hunt.  Pull the all dayers.

I've never had the oppertunity like yourself to hunt that much.  That would have been a dream. Its a shame work gets in the way of hunting.  But the wife and kids are thankfull.

I've been on 10pm-7am for 8 years now and even though I complain constantly and am constantly tired I know I would not get half of the things done that I need to get done on days. I worked what we call "Rotate" for about four years. That is 7am-3pm Mon. 3-11pm Tues.& Wed. and 10pm-7am on Thurs. Fri. Talk about spare time however I never got good sleep and my metabolisim went in the dumper. My days off on nights are Thurs. & Fri. also so at least for awhile I get the woods mostly to myself.

I feel your pain Tracy! All I can do is wait for the weekends and save up on the vacation days. Throw in a very active 13 year old daughter and all the other family activities that come up and before you know it a 3 month long season is over in the blink of an eye. It certainly makes you savor every minute you're able to get out there. I no longer crave new bows, arrows, fancy new camo, or any other gear for that matter. The one thing I would like more of is TIME!

Good luck with your season as well.

My schedule is a bit flexible- right now 7-4.  But my kids sports and coaching keeps me busy.  I can make it out after work and weekends right now- but I will be taking a few days off soon.

Welcome to My world Tracy. I've worked construction My whole life. Back when I worked on the bridge crew it was always hard to get off to hunt at all. Always trying to finish up before winter would set in. Now I go in at 6:00 a.m. and usually get off and home at 5:00 to 5:30. I now get weekends off, but My Daughter is very active in sports. She plays Basket ball and Volleyball at school and on club teams so almost every weekend of the summer and fall there is a tournament going on.

This weekend is substate Volleyball. I think I can squeeze in a morning hunt. I'm really looking forward to My 9 days off from Nov. 1st thru the 9th. I'm supposed to have the "Hope" bow for that time. Wish Me luck!!

Hope You find more time to get in the woods Bro. Good luck hunting . bretto

How about averaging 60-75(last week 89hrs!) and still haven't hunted deer yet...but maybe, just maybe I'll get this Sunday to hunt.....

And anyone who knows me, knows that after 30yrs of bowhunting....my urge to hit the woods is stronger than ever!!!!

All work and no play.......you know the rest

I work a 28 day rotation.
7 day shift-5 days off
7 2nd shift-1 day off
7 3rd shift-2 days off
Most are 12 or more hours.
One week I worked 5-20hr. days and on sat.-sun. 16hr.
I get tired thinking about it.

For years I worked from 6:00 am to 5 or 6:00 pm and only had five vacation days, now I work from 7:00AM to 3:30 pm with a lot more vac and other days I can get off. I take full advantage of the time I get to hunt knowing full well of the other side of the coin.
