Help me decide MOAB or Mohawk
« on: October 25, 2008, 04:15:00 PM »
New to trad archery, looking to get my first custom bow, currently have a bear montana 50#.

I like the Montana but the grip is a bit small for my hand plus I would like to go up a bit in weight.

I know they are both real quality bows and bowyers but what would be the difference between the two.

The Moab is faster right ?
Is the mohawk more forgiving?
Does the difference even matter?

I kinda like the idea of a flatter trajectory.

What say you.

Congrats on the deer!!!

Have not shoot either of these bows but best of luck with whichever one you choose. I have read nothing but good things about both of them.

Well I haven't shot the mohawks but have a Moab and love it, the grip is what I like the best. Yes it's fast but I follow the 10-12 grains per pound of draw rule and speed is not a top priority, I'd rather have two holes in whatever I shoot- one entry and one drain hole! My suggestion is to try and meet up with folks that shoot these and make a decision from there although you will get lots of advise etc... here ultimately a better decision would be made bow in hand if at all possible. If had a few of the "top" bows in the past and have kept the Moab the longest with no plans of letting it go unless I stumbled onto a Shrew( god this is a sickness)
Flat shooting/poor penetrating is for the training wheel guys, you would serve yourself and your quarry much better with a heavy hitting, relatively quick bow that you can shoot accurately and proficiently!!! Good luck these are the hardest decisions.....what to do. Lots of great bow and bow makers out there! Good Luck

That MOHAWK is one sweet shooting longbow!!!!!!!!!!Plenty fast and quiet and no hand shock.Short turn around and a great price for a quality bow.I had a MOAB and it  was just not for me . MOHAWK BETTER PRICE AND NOT A VERY LONG WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!And i think a better bow but thats my opinion.

Good job on that deer with your Montana! Well let me say this, I have owned a Thunderstick Mag, shot a MOAB,Thunderstick 111,all quality bows and Jim Reynolds is a great bowyer.I own a Mohawk and would never sell it. Dollar for dollar you can't beat it.Meat and potatoes type bow. Just like a Timex watch takes a lickin' keeps on tickin' . Very quiet and NO hand shock.Cocoabolla riser and four lams of Tonkin Cane Bamboo. My bow is 46#s at my 27" draw she spits out carbons and my woodies. She loves those heavy woodies. If I were you I would call Vince and talk to him.  See if he has a try out bow. He just sent me a two piece takedown to try out the handle is a little meatier than my bow because of the connection hinge Cocoabolla/bocote riser, actionboo cores, and red elm veneers. A very pretty bow. The finish on it is bazooka proof.Vince loves making bows for sure.

WHile I cannot comment on the MOAB I will tell you I love my Mohawk longbow. I looked long and hard before talking to Vince. He mad me the exact longbow I wanted. No hand shock and excellant shooting with excellant craftsmanship      A good friend of mine is preparing to order one and I will be getting Dad one next year. AS long as Vince is in business I will not buy another make of longbow  ;)   Craig

Just got my MOAB a few weeks ago.  Never shot a Mohawk.  Can't say enough good things about the MOAB.  Shoots where you look, no hand shock and is very fast.  Jim builds a great bow.  See if you can shoot both and then make a decision.  Good luck.

just heard that the grip on the MOAB is about 4" long (same as the montana) think that rules it out.

I'd have to measure it but the grip on my moab is longer and far more comfortable than the grip on my old plx, I have large hands and the moab is quite comfortable
