I use various fur silences (otter, beaver, and others) then I wrap the last 5-6 inches of the string with wool yarn. That really quites it down.

First of all solve the noise problem with a bare string. The string silencers should be the very last thing you put on.
1. Brace height usually higher will help...not too high
2. Don't shoot too light of arrow 8-10 grains per Lb of draw weight will make better use of the stored energy
3. If you suspect that you have string slap on the recurved portion of the limbs you could aply mole skin to prove it. I would not settle on this for a permanent fix though. I've proven that string slap on a properly braced bow is mostly the fault of the string. A flemish twist string that is twisted too tight at the slpice or has three bundles is touchy...believe me. If string slap is the problem here is how I fix it.
For B-50 strings Have a string maker make you a new string (or do it yourself) During the process right after the loop size has been established, LIGHTLY twist the first three inches of string that will contact the recurve limb first. Then tightly finnish off the remaining splice. This will creat a SOFT string that will eliminate string slap....
For fast flight strings use the same technique. Personaly I like to add eight strands of B-50 through the loops and splice for bearing surface and cushion.
After you have your bow as quiet as possible without string silencers then put on the simplest silencer you can find....Cat whiskers are hard to beat. Also apply these in moderation as well.
Do I ramble?............Relax I'm almost done
My point is that you should treat a noisy bow like you would treat a untuned bow....DON'T treat the symptoms....cure the illness. This way you can enjoy the beauty and simplicity of your equipment without the add ons that the high tech guys need.
Good luck

my d shaped longbow only needs a set of beaver balls and its just a slight thud noise, but on my recurve I use bowhush with either a set of catwhiskers or hushpuppies

I like rubber "cat whiskers" for a silencer, but where you put them will also make a difference. Tie them on around the string so they can be adjusted--moving them an inch or two up or down the string will make a big difference on some bows.

the easier...the better...roll around 3 fingers of you a B50 strand a 20y times...once finished, take off the "ball" from your fingers and flatten it...then take some scissors and cut the strands at each extremity of the ball...you will get then a strands' faggot...keep it just like that (it doesn't worth to bind it) and slide it into your string...after a 100 of shots you will get a perfect string silencer, much more durable than a wool one and water proof...less expensive, you die !

Bow hush and hush puppies from Tradgang store. i i've tried other fur and a couple rubber types----nothing else quieted my recurve better!
Proper brace height and heavy arrow helps too.

"correct brace height"
I think that your best option, and I've used cat whiskers. But I think what is put on the whisperstiks is beaver. And they are the quietest bows I have ever shot.
I sold both of mine, and could not stand it, so I have ordered another one from JD, only this one is exactly what I want, so I don't have to guess if it's the right poundage, or the right draw length. And if this one doesn't work out, I AM keeping it.....
