Saturday afternoon bowhunt.....turkeys and coyotes!
« on: October 27, 2008, 05:27:00 PM »
I came very close to nailing a turkey and a coyote this weekend out in Shackleford county. Just for grins and practice, I stalked a group of nicely bearded Toms for about an hour as they walked North up a road (at around 2pm) and was able to get within 35-45 yards, so I nocked an arrow, but could not make a close, clear shot and hope to stay hidden. I slipped over the fence between the neighboring pasture and the property I was hunting, hoping to stalk along the fence and shrubs as cover and get a shot across it when I was within range. As I looked at the flock working slowly up the dirt road North to the Brazos river, though my binoculars I noticed there was a coyote (a big one) stalking them as well. I was in full camo so maybe he didn't see me as I was on the opposite side of the road across the fence with the sun behind me, and he was in the mesquite trees on the East side of the road on the property I was hunting. I thought he was watching me, actually. I pushed them up the road and stalked them again this time from the original side of the fence in the mesquites along the road, but once closing within shooting range, the coyote hidden from my view suddenly appeared as he ran off and that spooked the turkeys who made for the Brazos river bottom at a brisk walk..........I later bumped into the same coyote and several yearling deer as I made a diagonal maneuver East into the mesquites and South back to the ranch house from the river bottom. He was about 1/4 mile East from where I first saw him....I settled down at a watering hole hoping to catch something coming in for a drink around 6pm, to no avail...it was a fun Saturday afternoon on a giant ranch all alone with my bow.
